My heart was a drumbeat of terror as I sprinted away from the monstrous black wolf that had appeared in the library. Panic seized me, and my breath came in ragged gasps. I didn't dare look back, my only focus on reaching the library door and slamming it shut behind me.
With trembling hands, I pulled the heavy door closed, and my heart pounded in my chest. The adrenaline rush was overwhelming, and I could hardly believe what I had just witnessed. Never in my life had I seen a wolf that colossal, that dark. It dwarfed even my own wolf, which had been large for our clan, and it would make my father's wolf, the biggest I had ever seen before this night, seem small by comparison.
I backed away from the door, my breath still coming in frantic bursts, until I reached the far wall of my chambers. There, I sank to the ground, my back pressed against the cold stone. I needed to calm my racing heart, to make sense of what I had just experienced.
The night passed in restless dreams filled with visions of the towering black wolf. Was it real, or had it been a nightmare born of my apprehension and exhaustion? I clung to the hope that it had all been a figment of my imagination.
Morning arrived with the harsh intrusion of light as the curtains were drawn open. I blinked, disoriented and drowsy, as the butler, Mr. Darrow, went about his duties.
"Good morning, Lady Seraphina," he announced with an air of formality. "Today is the day you will finally meet the Alpha King, as he has returned from his duties."
I sat up slowly, the events of the previous night still fresh in my mind. "Mr. Darrow," I began hesitantly, my voice trembling, "about last night, I saw..."
Before I could finish my sentence, Mr. Darrow cut me off, his tone dismissive. "It was likely a dream, Lady Seraphina. The castle is an old place with many hidden passages, and sometimes the imagination can play tricks."
I was taken aback by his response, but before I could press further, my ladies-in-waiting rushed into the room, their excitement palpable.
"Lady Seraphina, it's time to prepare for lunch with the King!" one of them exclaimed, her voice filled with eager anticipation.
Their chatter filled the room, but I found it difficult to focus on their words. The memory of the massive black wolf haunted my thoughts, and as the ladies worked to prepare me for the upcoming meeting with the Alpha King, I couldn't help but wonder if I had truly witnessed a nightmare or if there was something more mysterious lurking within the castle's ancient walls.
As I waited anxiously in my chamber, the anticipation of meeting the Alpha King weighed heavily on me. I paced the room, unable to shake the images of the massive black wolf from my mind. Despite the terrifying encounter, my thoughts were plagued more by the stories I had heard about the King – tales of his numerous marriages and the mysterious deaths of his former wives.
I couldn't help but wonder what kind of man he truly was. His track record suggested a man who was far from a gentle lover, and my apprehension grew with each passing moment.
A sudden knock at my door startled me, and I was relieved to see that it was Emily, the kind servant from the kitchen. She entered with a shy smile and a bow at her waist.
"You don't need to do that, Emily," I told her with a reassuring smile.
Emily placed a tray of tea on a nearby table. "Thank you, Lady Seraphina. The King has been momentarily delayed, but someone will be by shortly to call for you."
She exited quickly, leaving me alone with my thoughts. I sighed and slumped down into a small armchair, my mind a whirlwind of apprehension and nostalgia.
The tea on the tray carried the scent of flowers, reminding me of the garden back home. It was a stark reminder of the life I had left behind. Unable to bear the confinement of my room any longer, I made a decision. I couldn't be a prisoner within these castle walls.
Outside my chamber, I was met with an unexpected sight. Two guards stood vigilant by my door, a presence that hadn't been there the previous night. It didn't take much to connect the dots – this was likely the work of Mr. Darrow, the butler, after my attempt to tell him about the monstrous wolf in the library.
With determination, I attempted to pass between them, but one of the guards blocked my path. "I'm sorry, Lady Seraphina," he said, his voice firm but respectful, "but we've been instructed not to let you leave."
I clenched my fists, frustration boiling within me. "I don't need bodyguards. Please step aside."
The two guards exchanged uncertain glances, but they remained unmoved. My patience waned, and I raised my voice, fueled by the knowledge of my future status.
"I command you, as your future queen, to step aside and allow me to pass."
Just as my words echoed down the hallway, a deep, velvety voice resonated from further down the corridor, and a shiver ran down my spine.
"Looks like I've got a feisty one this time."
