Chapter Ten :Ghost of the Past

2000 Words
The morning came with the smell of smoke and salt The sea was restless again waves crashing against the rocks as if the world itself remembered something it wanted to forget Mirabel woke to the sound of Triumph’s uneven breathing the flicker of dying firelight tracing the sharp lines of his face He looked paler than before but alive Alive was enough Cole was outside keeping watch his silhouette framed by the thin gray light slipping into the cave Every few minutes the faint static of his comm device broke the silence like a heartbeat from another time Mirabel reached for the bandage on Triumph’s side checking it gently He winced but said nothing his eyes on her every movement as though memorizing her face in fragments “You should be resting” she whispered He smiled faintly “You should be somewhere safe” “Safe doesn’t exist anymore” she replied softly “Not for people carrying ghosts” A silence settled between them heavy but familiar Outside the storm clouds were gathering again dark and low The wind carried the distant echo of rotor blades like voices from the past calling their names Cole stepped back into the cave mud streaked across his boots “Scanners are back up I’ve got movement near the eastern ridge small team probably recon” Triumph tried to sit up “Agency?” “Most likely” Cole said loading his rifle “If they find this place we’re done” Mirabel stood her jaw set “Then we don’t wait for them to find us” Cole frowned “You have a better idea?” She pointed at the old crates near the back of the cave “Those are signal jammers from the old operations—they still work if we can reroute the power” Triumph nodded slowly “If we set a false beacon north of here it might draw them off long enough to reach the shore” Cole gave a low whistle “You two are either brilliant or suicidal” “Maybe both” Mirabel said They worked in silence the air thick with tension and the low hum of machinery coming back to life Mirabel’s hands shook as she adjusted the wires sparks jumping with each touch Triumph guided her voice hoarse but steady “Blue to red then ground it with the black lead—good—now switch it on” The console crackled alive the faint pulse of an outgoing signal echoing through the metal Cole checked his scanner “It’s broadcasting—they’ll chase it” Triumph leaned back against the wall eyes fluttering shut “Then we move now” Mirabel hesitated “You can’t walk far in this state” He opened his eyes and smiled weakly “You underestimate my bad decisions” Cole grabbed his pack “Let’s go before I start agreeing with him” They slipped into the gray dawn mist clinging to their clothes the world washed in silence and fear Every step was a race against time every breath a reminder of how close the past still was Halfway through the cliffs Triumph stumbled again Mirabel caught him before he fell pressing her forehead against his shoulder “Just a little further okay” He nodded breath shallow “You shouldn’t have come for me Mirabel” “I’d do it again” she whispered “Even knowing what I know now” He looked at her eyes dark and searching “Even if I’m not who you think I am?” She swallowed “Then I’ll learn who you really are” The wind howled over the ridge carrying the faint sound of rotor blades Cole turned sharply “They found the decoy too fast—they’re sweeping back this way” Triumph reached into his jacket pulling out the encrypted drive “If they catch us this dies with me” Mirabel’s eyes widened “No—” He pressed it into her hand “If I don’t make it to the shore you find Leona—she’s the only one who can finish what I started” Cole cursed under his breath “Incoming!” Gunfire split the air the sound ricocheting off the rocks Mirabel pulled Triumph down behind a stone outcrop while Cole fired back controlled bursts echoing through the fog One of the drones exploded overhead raining sparks down like dying stars But there were more coming “Run!” Cole shouted Mirabel dragged Triumph toward the shoreline the waves crashing violently below A small motorboat lay half-buried under a tarp rusted but intact She threw the tarp aside “Help me!” Cole sprinted toward them reloading as he ran “It won’t make it past the breakers” “It has to!” she shouted The sky roared again bright flashes lighting the cliffs like lightning made of fire Triumph pulled himself into the boat gritting his teeth against the pain “Get in!” Cole shoved them off the rocks the boat lurching forward into the open sea Bullets hit the water around them sending up sprays of salt and foam Mirabel clung to Triumph’s arm as he steered with his remaining strength Cole jumped in at the last second the boat nearly capsizing under the weight The horizon blurred with rain and smoke Behind them the island burned Triumph coughed blood staining his lips “If we make it to open waters they can’t follow” Mirabel pressed her hands over his wound “You’re going to make itdo you hear meyou have to” He gave a broken smile “You always did hate losing” Cole scanned the sky “Drones are turning back—they’re not pursuing” Mirabel looked back the island shrinking behind them like a ghost swallowed by fog For a long while there was only the sound of the waves and Triumph’s ragged breathing Then she whispered “What happens now?” Triumph’s gaze met hers a flicker of something fierce behind the exhaustion “Now we find Leona Voss” Cole sighed “And after that?” Triumph’s voice was barely a whisper “Then we end Directive Nine once and for all” The sea stretched endlessly before them gray and infinite Mirabel leaned her head against his shoulder feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath her palm He was still alive For now that was enough But somewhere deep inside she knew this peace would not last The past always finds its way back And before it was over One of them would pay its price The wind was calmer now but the air carried a strange chill as if the ocean itself was holding its breath Cole shut the engine off letting the boat drift through the mist that lay heavy over the water The silence felt unnatural too still too watching Mirabel tightened her grip on Triumph’s hand afraid that if she let go he might fade into the gray He stirred his eyes half open “How far” “Not far” Cole said quietly “We’ll reach the coast before sunrise if the tide holds” The faint outline of land began to take shape ahead dark cliffs rising out of the fog like sleeping giants Mirabel’s heart lifted but only for a moment because the closer they got the colder it felt Something about that coast whispered danger As they neared the shore Triumph’s breathing grew worse each inhale sharp and uneven Mirabel tore a strip of cloth from her sleeve and pressed it to his wound again her voice trembling “Stay with me please just stay with me” He forced a faint smile “I told you before I don’t die easily” Cole jumped out first pulling the boat to the sand his boots sinking into the wet ground He scanned the cliffs above “No heat signatures no patrols looks clear for now” Mirabel helped Triumph onto the sand his weight heavy against her shoulder He tried to stand but his legs gave out and they both fell to their knees the cold surf soaking them Cole moved fast building a small fire from driftwood and broken crates their faint glow casting trembling light across Triumph’s face He was shaking now sweat beading on his forehead Mirabel brushed the hair from his eyes whispering “We need shelter” Cole nodded pointing to a structure half hidden by rock and ivy “There used to be a comm station there before the purge we can hole up till daylight” They carried Triumph slowly every step a battle against exhaustion and fear Inside the old building the air was stale filled with dust and rusted metal the ghosts of forgotten voices trapped in static .. Mirabel lowered Triumph onto a bench her hands stained with blood and salt She met Cole’s eyes “We can’t keep running like this he won’t survive another chase” Cole’s expression was grim “Then we stop running and start fighting back” Mirabel stared at him unsure whether to call it courage or madness “Fight back against what Cole an army a system that erased entire lives” He stepped closer his voice low “Against everything that tried to make us ghosts” For a moment neither spoke the wind outside wailing through the broken walls like a warning Then Triumph’s voice broke the silence “He’s right” Both their heads turned toward him his eyes open now bright with fever but sharp with purpose “If we don’t finish this they’ll keep coming after us after everyone who still remembers” Mirabel shook her head “You can barely stand” He smiled faintly “Then I’ll give what’s left of me to end it” Cole moved to the console brushing away layers of dust revealing the faded insignia of the agency burned into the metal He looked back at them “This place was one of their signal relays if the power grid still connects we might trace where the remaining directives are stored” Mirabel frowned “And Leona” Triumph nodded slowly “If she’s alive she’ll know how to break the encryption the drive won’t open without her code” Cole started rewiring the panel sparks leaping between his fingers as the system flickered to life screens glowing faintly green Static filled the room then a line of coordinates appeared on the monitor Mirabel’s heart skipped “That’s inland” Triumph’s voice was barely audible “East Haven… Leona’s safehouse” Cole smiled grimly "Guess our ghost left us a trail" Thunder rolled outside the storm building again over the sea Mirabel tightened her coat around Triumph her eyes never leaving the glowing screen The past was calling them deeper And for the first time she wasn’t sure if finding Leona would save them or destroy what little they had left The wind howled louder carrying the scent of rain and ashes Triumph closed his eyes whispering "When we find her it ends" Cole glanced toward the horizon his jaw tightening “One way or another it will” And as the first drops of rain began to fall against the shattered roof Mirabel looked out into the darkness knowing that the real storm had only just begun The rain fell harder now washing the blood from Triumph’s hands but not the weight of what they carried Somewhere beyond the thunder a single light blinked in the distance faint and pulsing like a signal waiting to be found Mirabel stepped closer to the doorway her eyes fixed on that distant light her heart pounding with a mix of hope and fear Behind her Triumph whispered her name and in that fragile sound she knew the past had finally caught up with them
