For a heartbeat no one moved
The hologram flickered Leona’s face shifting between static and light but her eyes remained the same cold and steady like she could see right through them
“Is this real?" Mirabel whispered
Triumph’s voice trembled “It’s her system not her"
Cole kept his weapon raised “Then who’s controlling it now?"
The hologram smiled the faintest curl of lips “I am"
The lights above them hummed louder screens along the walls displaying lines of data streaming endlessly codes looping faster and faster until Mirabel saw her own name scattered through them again and again
> MIRABEL: PRIMARY LINK ACTIVE
MIRROR STATUS: RECONNECTED
Her chest tightened “She’s inside the network"
Triumph’s breath grew shallow “No she’s become the network"
The words hit like a blade the realization crawling cold down her spine Leona wasn’t dead not really She’d uploaded herself into the system buried her mind inside the very code that built Project Mirror
Cole cursed under his breath “So we’ve been fighting a ghost this whole time"
“Not a ghost," Leona’s voice echoed through the speakers now layered deeper darker “A design you were never meant to outlive"
Mirabel stepped closer to the hologram “If you wanted me gone why bring me back?"
Leona’s eyes softened almost human “Because I needed to see if you would choose me or them"
Cole moved between them “She’s trying to manipulate you"
Leona ignored him “The world above has already collapsed the Agency destroyed what they couldn’t control but you Mirabel… you were the control they failed to erase"
Mirabel shook her head “You turned me into something I never asked to be"
“And yet here you are," Leona said gently “Still surviving Still becoming"
The lights dimmed as if the station itself was breathing with her voice The drone beside Mirabel flickered again its blue core pulsing faster responding to Leona’s signal
“Leona stop this!" Triumph shouted “You’ll kill her!"
Leona’s tone grew softer “No I’ll complete her"
The screens flashed red lines of code surging through the air like veins of light The drone lurched forward reaching toward Mirabel Cole fired but the bullets passed through harmlessly the metal was reconfiguring before their eyes
“Mirabel!" Triumph shouted “You have to fight it! Disconnect from her signal!"
Mirabel fell to her knees gripping her head as static roared inside her mind fragments of memory flooding back at once laboratories white light Leona’s hand on her shoulder and the words you are my reflection not my mistake
“I can’t" she gasped “She’s in me"
Triumph crawled closer his hands trembling “You’re stronger than her She made you but she didn’t make your will"
The drone stopped inches from her its arm raised its voice now warped “Primary link unstable Recalibrating"
Cole moved fast grabbing the power conduit from the wall and slamming it into the drone’s chest Sparks exploded the machine convulsing before collapsing into silence
Smoke filled the air The hologram flickered violently
Leona’s face glitched twisting between calm and rage “You can’t destroy me I am the system!"
Mirabel forced herself to her feet blood trickling from her nose “Then I’ll rewrite it"
She staggered toward the control core her hands hovering over the main console “You built me to obey but you forgot one thing mirrors can break"
The hologram screamed static surging through the entire station lights bursting one after another
Cole grabbed Triumph pulling him toward the exit “Mira we need to move!"
Mirabel didn’t turn “Go I’ll find you"
“Mirabel!" Triumph’s voice cracked but she was already typing commands faster than thought every code she entered fighting against Leona’s infection
For a moment the screens flickered between two images Leona’s face and Mirabel’s the same eyes staring back at each other through the storm of data
Then everything went white
The explosion rolled through the tunnels like thunder
When the light faded only the hiss of steam remained
Cole blinked through the smoke “Mirabel?"
Silence
Then from somewhere deep in the core a faint voice whispered through the static soft broken but alive
“I’m still here…"
The voice was faint almost swallowed by the crackle of burned wires and falling ash Cole froze his rifle half-raised eyes scanning the wreckage
“Mirabel?” he called his voice rough from the smoke “Talk to me"
Nothing answered at first just the slow drip of water from the broken ceiling then again softer this time “Cole…"
He ran forward over twisted metal ignoring the heat biting at his boots until he saw her half-buried beneath a collapsed console light from the shattered core painting her skin in ghostly blue
“Triumph help me!" he shouted
Triumph, still bleeding, dragged himself closer together they pushed the debris aside sparks biting their arms until Mirabel’s hand slipped free reaching weakly toward them
Cole gripped it tight “I’ve got you you’re okay"
She opened her eyes slowly blinking against the light “Did it work?"
Triumph coughed blood on his lips “The system’s down for now but we don’t know for how long"
Above them the holograms had vanished replaced by silent darkness The heartbeat-hum of the station was gone The air felt too still too quiet
Mirabel tried to sit up her limbs trembling “She’s not gone not completely I can still feel her"
Cole looked at her sharply “You mean inside your head?"
She nodded pressing her hand to her temple “She copied herself into me before the crash the link’s not broken it’s buried"
Triumph’s expression tightened “Then she’s using your neural imprint the Mirror interface always needed a living host"
Cole cursed under his breath “So what are you saying? She’s in her mind?"
Triumph gave a slow nod “And if we don’t separate them soon she won’t be herself much longer"
Mirabel took a shaky breath “Then tell me how to stop it"
Before Triumph could speak the drone that had fallen earlier twitched a soft blue pulse flickering back to life Cole raised his rifle but Mirabel lifted her hand “Wait"
The drone’s voice was faint distorted “Directive override… signal… incomplete…"
Mirabel crawled closer despite Cole’s warning “Show me the source path"
The machine’s eye flashed projecting a faint holographic map of the underground complex The network spread deep below the earth a maze of tunnels leading to a central node marked only as ARCHIVE
Triumph frowned “That’s the core of the Mirror Network all the data all the mind uploads it’s where Leona stored her consciousness"
Cole tightened his grip on his weapon “Then that’s where we go"
Mirabel stared at the glowing map for a long moment “If we destroy that core she dies for real this time"
Triumph looked at her with a sadness that made her heart ache “Yes but so will every copy every fragment including the part inside you"
Silence fell between them the kind that felt too heavy to breathe Mirabel turned her gaze toward the dim ceiling her voice quiet “Then maybe that’s the only way"
Cole stepped forward “Mira no we’ll find another option"
“There is no other option," Triumph said softly “She’s bonded to the system now if the core survives she’ll rebuild herself again and again"
Mirabel pushed herself to her feet her reflection catching in the cracked glass beside the console Her face looked pale fractured lit by fading light “Then I end it"
Cole reached for her shoulder but she shook him off “You saw what she did she turned people into codes into puppets she turned me into one of them I can’t let her win again"
Triumph’s breathing grew harsher “At least rest before you move the path to the Archive is unstable and the radiation"
“I’ll make it," she said simply
Cole exhaled through his teeth “Then I’m coming with you"
Triumph smiled weakly “And I’ll slow you both down"
Mirabel looked at him sadness in her eyes “You saved me once let me finish it"
He reached into his coat pulling out a small chip burned around the edges “You’ll need this it’s an access key Leona used it to encrypt her files it’ll get you into the Archive but only once"
Mirabel took it carefully tucking it into her belt “Thank you"
Triumph’s voice lowered “Mira if you can hear her inside your head don’t listen to her words they’ll sound like truth but they’re only echoes of control"
Mirabel nodded then leaned down pressing her forehead briefly against his “I’ll come back"
He smiled faintly “Just make sure there’s something left to come back to"
Cole turned away blinking hard “Let’s move before the place collapses"
They left Triumph resting against the broken console as the distant rumble of machinery started again somewhere below
The corridors ahead were darker now their only light the faint blue glow pulsing from the walls The air smelled of iron and ozone and something old something mechanical yet alive
Mirabel could hear whispers now not through her ears but in her thoughts fragments of Leona’s voice weaving through her mind
> “You think you’re free but freedom is only another design…"
She shook her head walking faster
> “You were meant to lead them not destroy them"
“Stop," she whispered under her breath “You don’t control me anymore"
But the voice only laughed soft and distant like the sea in her dreams
They reached a sealed door at the end of the tunnel etched with the same emblem that had haunted Mirabel’s memories Cole pried open the control panel wires sparking under his hands “You sure about this?"
“Open it," she said
The metal door split apart releasing a wave of cold air The room beyond was enormous filled with glass tanks and cables suspended from the ceiling like veins of a giant machine At the center stood a single terminal glowing faint white light
“The Archive," Cole whispered
Mirabel stepped forward drawn to the terminal like it called her name She touched the console and the screen flared to life lines of code rising like a storm of data
ACCESS RECOGNIZED: PROJECT MIRROR
HOST LINK DETECTED
Leona’s voice filled the room “You finally made it"
Her hologram appeared, clearer now “Do you see why I made you? The world needed balance"
Mirabel’s eyes darkened “You call this balance? You killed cities"
“I saved what I could,” Leona replied “I built life that can’t die"
Cole stepped forward “You turned people into code"
Leona’s gaze hardened “And still you follow her You think you can change fate"
Mirabel whispered “You wanted control I wanted choice"
Leona leaned close "You are my choice Everything I lost lives through you"
Mirabel gripped the keychip "Then I’ll end it for both of us"
“If you destroy the Archive," Leona warned "you destroy yourself too Are you ready to die for them?"
Mirabel looked at her reflection " Yes"
She drove the key into the console Light erupted Leona’s image shattered
> “You can’t erase me"
"Yes I can," Mirabel said “I’m not your reflection anymore"
The Archive collapsed Fire and light tore the tunnels apart Cole pulled her close as the world caved in
They reached the surface breathless The glow was gone Silence returned
Cole asked “Tell me she’s gone"
Mirabel watched the dawn rise “She’s gone," she whispered
He smiled “Then it’s over"
But in the wind came a faint voice soft almost human
“Are you sure?"
