Chapter 5 THREE MINUTES LATER the engine whistle screeched, the brakes went on, and the speed of the train slackened, preparatory to stopping. 'A station!' muttered Claverdon, and groped his way to the door. He did not open it, however, until the lights of a wayside station flashed into view: but when the train came to a standstill he stepped on to the platform and signalled to a solitary Eurasian official, who showed no violent hurry to respond. Meanwhile, he watched the line of the train. The station was full of shadows. but he was morally certain that no one left the train; and indeed scarcely a head showed at the doors.
