***Elara***
I ran through the forest, my heart pounding in my chest, each footfall heavy against the earth. The trees blurred around me, the moonlight filtering through the thick canopy above, but my thoughts were consumed by the power surging inside me. It was like a storm, a force I couldn’t control, urging me to go further, deeper.
I stumbled over the uneven ground, my breath coming in sharp gasps. *What is happening to me?* The words echoed in my mind, but I had no answers. All I knew was that the more I ran, the stronger the pull became, drawing me forward like an invisible tether.
I could still hear Kieran’s voice in my mind, sharp and commanding, but I pushed it aside. I couldn’t deal with them right now—not with the confusing, dangerous feelings that were brewing inside me.
*Protect it... or the world will burn.*
The voice from the darkness—was it inside my head or coming from the trees themselves? I couldn’t tell anymore. All I knew was that it was a warning, a warning that made my blood run cold. I had to find out what was happening to me. I had to understand.
I broke through the trees into a clearing, my breath catching in my throat as the moonlight revealed the ancient altar before me. It was unlike anything I had ever seen—stone, covered in moss and markings that seemed to pulse with an eerie energy. The air around it vibrated, as if it were alive.
I hesitated. Something deep inside me urged me closer, pulling me toward the stone structure. I knew this place. I knew it like a distant memory, like I had been here before.
*Touch it. Claim it. The power is yours.*
The words—once again—pushed me forward. I stepped into the clearing, feeling the chill of the night seep into my bones, and reached out to place my palm on the cold stone.
The moment my skin made contact, a violent surge of energy shot through me, jolting my entire body. My muscles locked up, my vision blurring as the power consumed me. A vision flashed before my eyes—destruction, fire, chaos—and then, the sound of a low growl broke through the haze of my mind.
“Elara…”
I whirled around, my heart skipping a beat. There, standing at the edge of the clearing, was Kieran. His eyes were wild, his usual stoic expression replaced with one of pure concern and fury.
“What the hell are you doing?” he demanded, his voice rough. He strode toward me, his gaze scanning the altar before locking onto me.
“I—I don’t know.” My voice was shaky, still feeling the aftershocks of the power coursing through my veins. “I just… I had to come here. It told me I had to touch it.”
His eyes softened for just a second before hardening again. He stepped closer, his tone dark and urgent. “You shouldn’t have done that, Elara. This power—it’s not something you can just take. It comes with a cost.”
I shook my head, feeling the overwhelming weight of his words. *A cost?* What cost? What did he mean?
“I didn’t know,” I whispered, more to myself than to him.
Kieran reached out, grabbing my wrist to pull me away from the altar. His grip was strong, but it didn’t comfort me. If anything, it made the pull inside me grow stronger, tugging me toward the altar, toward something I didn’t understand.
“I’m not going anywhere,” I said defiantly, my feet rooted to the spot.
Kieran’s jaw clenched, frustration flickering in his eyes. “You don’t get it. This isn’t just a random power, Elara. It’s connected to something ancient. Something dangerous.”
Before I could respond, the ground beneath us trembled. A low growl echoed through the woods, sending a chill down my spine.
“Not again…” Kieran muttered, his gaze flicking around the clearing. His body was already tensing, preparing to shift.
I spun in the direction of the growl, my pulse spiking. There, stepping from the shadows, was a figure. Tall, cloaked in darkness, with eyes that glowed a golden hue—unearthly and piercing. His presence sent a shiver down my spine.
“Elara…” The figure’s voice was smooth, chilling, as if it could freeze the air itself.
I froze. My body was locked in place, an unexplainable connection to this stranger that both terrified and intrigued me. The bond with Kieran faltered, the invisible thread between us unraveling with each step the stranger took toward me.
Kieran’s voice was urgent, a low growl in his chest. “Don’t listen to him, Elara. Whatever he says—don’t trust him.”
But the figure’s gaze never wavered from mine. The air felt thick, like the very forest was holding its breath, waiting for something to happen.
“We finally meet,” the figure said, his lips curling into a dangerous smile. “And just in time. The power you now hold belongs to me.”
“No,” Kieran snapped, stepping forward. His hand moved to my shoulder, pulling me closer to him, as if trying to shield me from the stranger. “This power is not yours. You don’t control her.”
The figure laughed, a sound that was as cold as the grave. “You think you can protect her? You have no idea what she’s become. She’s already claimed it.”
The ground shook again, more violently this time, and the air crackled with an unnatural energy.
“Kieran…” I whispered, panic rising in my chest. “What’s happening? What does he mean?”
Before he could respond, the figure’s eyes flashed with an unsettling hunger. “You will find out soon enough, Elara,” he said, his voice sending a shiver through me. “But first… I think it’s time to test just how far your new power reaches.”
And with that, the world around us shattered, the sound of something large moving through the woods filling the air, closing in on us.
Kieran’s eyes were wide with warning. “Run, Elara!”
But I couldn’t. Not with the stranger’s eyes on me. Not with the weight of the power inside me pulling me toward him.
And then, the ground beneath us cracked open, a fissure forming right at the center of the clearing. From it, something dark and dangerous began to rise.
The air grew thick with a suffocating pressure.
*This is only the beginning.*
