The Chamber Beneath the Hill The staircase seemed endless. Iyara counted her steps at first, hoping it would calm the strange feeling building in her chest. Ten steps. Twenty. Fifty. Soon, she lost track entirely as the stone stairs spiralled deeper beneath the hill. The air grew colder with every step. Behind them, the faint light from the entrance slowly disappeared until the darkness wrapped around them like a heavy curtain. Tade finally broke the silence. “I really wish we had brought a flashlight.” Iyara touched the stone wall beside her, guiding herself carefully. “I think the wind will help us.” “That sounds encouraging,” he said, “but the wind is not exactly great at lighting dark tunnels.” Almost as if it heard him, a faint breeze moved through the staircase. A soft glow appeared along the walls. Lines carved into the stone began to shine faintly with pale silver light, the same symbols they had seen on the stones above. Tade stopped walking. “Oh.” Iyara smiled slightly. “I told you.” The glowing carvings lit the staircase just enough for them to see the path ahead. The walls were covered with swirling patterns that looked like wind moving through clouds. They continued downward. After several minutes, the staircase ended. They stepped into a vast underground chamber. Tade’s eyes widened. The room was enormous, far larger than the hill above could possibly contain. Tall stone pillars stretched upward into darkness, their surfaces covered with the same glowing wind symbols. In the centre of the chamber stood a circular platform made of smooth white stone. Above it, the air itself seemed to move. A spiral of wind floated silently in the middle of the chamber, turning slowly like a small invisible storm. Iyara felt her breath catch. “That must be it.” Tade stared at the swirling air. “The Heart of the Wind?” She nodded slowly. The spiral pulsed softly with light, growing brighter and dimmer like a living heartbeat. The wind in the chamber moved gently around it, almost like it was protecting the glowing spiral. Iyara stepped forward carefully. As she approached, the wind stirred around her feet and rose slowly toward her shoulders. Tade stayed behind. “Are you sure it’s safe?” “I think it recognizes me,” she said quietly. Each step made the glowing spiral shine a little brighter. When Iyara reached the platform, the wind lifted around her in a soft circle. She raised her hand slowly toward the floating spiral. The moment her fingers touched the air inside it, the entire chamber erupted with light. The wind roared through the pillars, spinning wildly across the room. Tade grabbed onto one of the stone columns to steady himself. “Iyara!” She gasped as memories rushed into her mind again. Visions flashed before her eyes. She saw the ancient village that once stood here centuries ago. The elders gathered in this chamber. The wind spiralling above the same platform. A voice spoke within the memory. “The wind belongs to no one,” the elder had said. “But it chooses those who will protect its balance.” The younger Iyara had stood exactly where she stood now. “And if someone tries to control it?” she had asked. “Then the wind will need a guardian.” The memory faded. Iyara dropped to one knee, breathing heavily. Tade rushed forward. “Are you okay?” “Yes,” she said softly. “I remember now.” “What do you remember?” “The Heart of the Wind isn’t just power.” She looked up at the glowing spiral. “It’s balance.” The wind in the chamber slowly calmed. The spiral above the platform floated quietly again. Tade crossed his arms. “So the traveller wants to control it.” “Yes.” “And if he does?” Iyara’s expression darkened. “The storms would never stop.” A deep rumble echoed through the chamber. Both of them froze. That sound had not come from the wind. It had come from above. Tade looked toward the ceiling. “Please tell me that wasn’t thunder.” Iyara stood slowly. “He found the entrance.” The rumble grew louder. Dust fell from the stone ceiling as the ground trembled slightly. The traveller was coming. Tade stepped closer to the platform. “What do we do?” Iyara stared at the spiral of wind. “If he reaches this chamber, he’ll try to take the heart.” “Can he?” She hesitated. “I don’t know.” Another crash echoed above them. The sound of stone breaking carried faintly through the tunnel staircase. He was forcing his way down. Tade looked nervous. “That sounds very close.” Iyara closed her eyes. The wind swirled around her again, stronger than before. For a moment, it felt like it was speaking directly into her mind. Guiding her. Showing her something hidden within the chamber. Her eyes opened suddenly. “There’s another way.” Tade blinked. “Another way where?” “Out.” She pointed toward a narrow passage hidden behind one of the pillars. “The wind is showing me.” Another violent crash shook the chamber. A loud cracking sound echoed from the staircase. The traveller had reached the tunnel. Tade didn’t hesitate this time. “Okay,” he said quickly. “I trust the wind.” Iyara looked once more at the glowing spiral. The Heart of the Wind pulsed softly, as if watching her. “I’ll come back,” she whispered. The wind stirred gently around her shoulders. Then, she turned toward the hidden passage. She and Tade ran. Behind them, a powerful gust of wind suddenly swept across the chamber. The glowing spiral brightened once more. As if preparing itself. Because seconds later, footsteps echoed down the staircase. Slow. Confident. The traveller stepped into the chamber. His silver eyes immediately locked onto the floating spiral. A dark smile spread across his face. “So,” he said softly. “At last.” The Heart of the Wind floated quietly above the platform, waiting in the silent chamber.
