Penelope’s POV
I heard my father’s voice echo from the hallways, I could sense his anger from his voice. I rolled my eyes, trying not to get affected by his sudden anger. I’m sure his favorite daughter had gone to make her complaints and I began to wonder what she must have told him.
“Come upstairs with me right now” my father’s voice interrupted my thoughts.
I stared at Lucian who had been watching the exchange between I and my father. I flashed a smile his way while he just stared at me blankly.
“What are you still doing standing there?” My father’s voice came out low and intimidating.
“Father, did you see that we have a visitor?” I asked, smirking at Lucian, who my father had marked invincible.
My father turned around from the doorway and I could get that he was about to nag about something or threaten me with something.
“Do you need me to remind you of your place in this house? Or do you need us to wash our dirty linen in front of this your so-called visitor?” I could thirst the distaste in my father's tongue as the words rolled out of his tongue.
“All I am asking of you is that you acknowledge the visitor”. Now it was clear that I was just trying to taunt him and make him loose all the gray hair on his head. I snickered at the thought of my father going bald.
My father walked towards me, forcefully grabbing my ankle and trying to pull me to the exit door to follow him upstairs.
“Let go of my arms this minute”, I screamed at him. I looked at Lucian for some sort of help, but he just stared right back at me. Once again, I could not read the expression he had on. I could not tell if he felt pity for me or if he still thinks that I can handle myself.
“Ermmm erm..” Lucian cleared his throat, making my father and I turn to his direction “shouldn’t this be considered as assault?” He said with a little bit of flint in his eyes, he too wanted to taunt my father and I could tell that my father would definitely lose all his hair before the end of today.
“Mind your business, young man” my father, whose voice had been coming out lower than usual and a little bit intimidating, finally let go of his cool, he yelled at Lucian, who just had a knowing smirk on his face.
Lucian walked closer to me, pulling me to him, but my father pulled me closer and I wondered why he thought that I was still a kid that could be controlled.
“Okay fine, I will follow you upstairs, so please let go of me” I said, tired of the struggling. I could not avoid him forever even though that is exactly what I wanted to do. Avoiding him would not be possible since we live together.
I walked closely behind my father, hoping that he would just stop in the hallways and say whatever the damn thing he had to say there, but no, we walked all the way to his private study.
“Shut the door behind you, Penelope” he said, his voice laced with a little anger. I could tell that he was still mad about the display downstairs, and he was probably thinking of ways to teach me a lesson for going against him in front of a stranger.
“Your sister made a complaint about you….” I rolled myself internally because I knew the little brat must have cried to my father and painted all sorts of fake scenarios for him making me look like a devil.
“I am sure you know what I am talking about, so why the silence?” My father’s voice cut through my thoughts.
“I am sure she told you everything that happened and how it happened, so I don’t think there is anything left for me to say.”
“You will have to apologize to your sister.”
I stared at my father, a bit surprised at the resolve he had come to. It has always been me sacrificing one thing or the other to make Victoria happy or even the family happy. Nobody cares about my happiness, all they know how to do is take and take without giving me s**t back. With all the thoughts running through my head, I felt myself laughing. It was as if I was about to run mad.
“Does apologizing to your sister sound funny to you?” My father said in that voice he always uses whenever he wants me to give something up for Victoria.
“Yeah, I think it is a ridiculous thing to do” I said, looking at my father straight in the eyes.
“I can see that you now have the balls to stand against me, defy my word and do as you like” my father threw me a dirty look, and then he cracked his fingers. I think when I was younger I used to be scared of that act, but I’m older and wiser now.
“Don’t you think it is funny how you always side with Victoria over me, even though we are almost identical? If we did not come into this world almost the same time, I would have had doubts about you being my father.”
“What nonsense are you saying?”
It is actually funny seeing my father acting like he has no idea what he has been doing to me all these years and, even though I had taken it all in as the least favorite child, my pride is deeply hurt that the ones I call family would defy me in such an unspeakable way because of their own greed.
“You want me to apologize for standing up for myself? What about the times I came to you crying about something Victoria did, but she covered it up with her standing up for herself and you applauded her for it?”
“Well, that was then…”
“Tsk”
I made a sound with my tongue cutting my father off. I knew he was going to act like all those years did not exist or, better still, cover up his actions, but I’m not going back.
“Since you want to play it like that father, then I will say that this is a new dispensation, and I am not going to let either you or Victoria let me lose my voice all over again.”
“Do you want me to remind you of the news going around about you” my father smirked at me, thinking he is going to win this round.
“Do I also have to remind you of the devil who caused the incident to happen?” I replied to him, not breaking eye contact.
“You have grown a lot of wings, young lady. Is it the man I saw you with earlier that is making you want to fly? Do you think he can give you what this family has given you?”
“Since we are talking about give and take, what has this family given that I have not merited with my own hands? I would rather be with that stranger than stay here with you people.”
“So, you are going to pick the stranger over your own family” my father let out a sardonic laughter, “you’ll regret your actions, Pen, and I hope it won’t be too late then.”
“Father, I can see that you don’t get it, but I am done being your puppet, I am done being the carpet you all are ever ready to step on for your own benefit always, I took one last breath. “I am done, being that girl,, so you can do whatever you like but be rest assured that I will fight back”
My father’s face grew red with anger. I guess he was hoping that I would succumb to his words like always and carry out his orders without complaints.
“You are no match for me, Pen, and I can assure you that you will take your words back even before daybreak.”
I let out a chuckle, still amazed that my father thinks I would give in to him. “Are we still in that delusional bubble?” My father’s face grew redder.
“You think you can defy me?…”
The door to my father’s study opened and Victoria sauntered in with a smirk on her face. She probably might be thinking that I have given in to the submission.
“Look who we have here” I said, turning to Victoria, who walked to my father to give him a peck on his cheeks. She must be really blind to not be able to read the room.
“Are you ready to apologize to me now?”
“Is that why you are here? To take your apology on a platter”, I gave her a smug smile while her eyes just shifted to my father, who had not yet said a word since she got into the office.
“Father, can you see how she is speaking to me?” She stared at him, but he gave her no response, and then she looked at me frustrated. “I can see that you have grown some wings, talking to me like that in front of my father. You are going to chew your words very soon”
“How soon? I really want to know, so I can bring the day closer.”
“Father, can you see her rapping her mouth as if we had not brushed her up?”
“Don’t mind her, she is going to beg us to live in this house very soon. Just you wait my darling” my father said, patting Victoria on the shoulder. I have never felt this disgusted at their behavior as I did right now.
“How did I even manage to put up with you people for so long?” Even though I tried to hide how irritated I was by them, my voice gave it all away “Victoria, we are literally twins, so I wonder why you always feel the need to say I was picked up from the gutter. Were you picked up from the gutter? I doubt that my existence has anything to do with filth.”
Victoria stared at me angrily, and I could just tell that she had plans to rip me apart. “Take your words back, you slut.”
“And if I don’t?” We did a short staring contest before she suddenly lunged at me by pulling my hair.
“I am going to teach you a lesson that you will never forget” she said, firming her grip on the strands of my hair
“I can see that you want a repeat of what happened earlier and i am going to give you just that” I used my feet to step on hers, and before she could recover from the pain, I elbowed her sides, making her let go of my hair.
Being the cry baby that she was, she walked back to my father’s side seeking to be consoled while I removed imaginary dirt from my body. I walked to the exit because my presence was no longer needed.
“Where do you think you are going to?” My father said all of a sudden.
“No specific location but away from here” I said, not turning in their direction.
“If you leave this place without apologizing to me and your sister for your insolent behavior, then be prepared for war” my father said, seething in anger.
“Is that all father?” I replied, turning to him to see his reaction.
“Say goodbye to your inheritance, Penelope”
“Okay” I said about walking out of my father’s study.
“This family will no longer have anything to do with you if you walk out of that door” my father’s voice sounded calculating, he was at his A game trying to convince me to still be their puppet while they enjoy the inheritance to themselves.
“Whether I stay here or not, both of you were never going to accept me or even give me access to my inheritance. It was just going to be the name and the status, and I am done with that, so enjoy.”
With that being said, I walked out of my father’s study not looking back or regretting anything I said. Some part of me had started to prick me for making such a grave decision without thinking about it or having something planned out first, but everything that happened was going to happen anyways. Better late than never.
I walked back downstairs, heading outside to go get fresh air when I walked into Lucian again.
“Thought you had left already” I said to him, smiling, trying to hide my emotions.
“We did not get a chance to complete our conversation, and I was not sure when we would meet again” he stated to me knowingly, and I felt that he knew more than the display my father had put up earlier on. “I want to help you Pen,”
“You don’t have to”, I turned away from him, walking straight to the exit of the house.
“You don’t have to hold back, I am sure your family is going to disown you for everything that is happening.” I turned to face him again because he was not far away from the truth, they had already disowned me, but I was not going to tell him that just yet.
“What are you on to?” I asked him. My curiosity peeked, hoping that he had a brilliant idea to exact my revenge on those godforsaken people.
“We can’t talk here. Let me take you somewhere that they won’t be able to hear us.”
