It was late when I got back to Gran’s. I’d been walking, trying to get this straight in my mind. It was probably a good two miles from the Lodge to Gran’s—some of it on the shore, some on the streets. There wasn’t a square inch of me that wasn’t covered with sweat. The porch light over the door cast a warm glow over the back yard. Even the darkness hadn’t lessened the heat. I sat down on the top step and put my head down in my hands, my elbows resting on my knees. I was quiet until I heard someone behind me. “There you are. Where’s your car? Melissa and Sally have gone out in Melissa’s looking for you.” I didn’t move, just sat there with my arms around my legs, forehead resting on my knees. “I left it on the other side of the lake. I’ve been walking,” I said softly. Gran was horrified.
