Lucien's fingers loosened around the cup as his vision blurred.
The fire light swayed strangely, the room spinning around him
His chest rose slowly, too slowly
Something was wrong
Then, a sharp pain hit his head
His thoughts grew heavy, then slipped away like water.
Suddenly, he wasn't in his room anymore
He was on the battlefield, smoke filled the air and screams echoed all around
Blood stained the ground
A man was lying there, it was Eryndor, barely breathing
His swords was just out of reach
Lucien felt his heart pounding in his chest
“ Elira”
The name left his mouth, almost immediately
A flash of lightning, the sound of swords and just like that
It was gone.
Lucien gasped, breathing hard
He was back in his chamber, selene was talking but he barely heard her
He placed a hand on his head
What was that?
Lucien blinked, his mind slowly started to clear.
Selene's voice cut through the silence
“ You are quiet all of a sudden ” she said, stepping closer to Lucien “ is the drink too strong?” she asked
He looked up, his eyes more focused now
“ What did you put in it?” he asked again
Selene smiled “ Something mild. I just wanted you softer, you are always so guarded, Lucien ”
He stood up slowly “ You drugged me ”
“ Don't act like you don't want this. You always push me away, but i know what we had, what we still could have”
Lucien caught her wrist before she touched him, and tossed her hand away
“ Whatever you think we had, it is over”
Selene's smile faltered “ What are you talking about?”
Lucien didn't answer
He stepped back slowly, trying to shake off the fog in his head
His heartbeat pounded in his ears and his body felt weak, but not completely. Not yet
Selene moved toward him again
“ I didn't mean. I just..... I missed you" she said, her voice soft and shaking
“ You missed him Selene ” Lucien said quietly, looking at her coldly “ Not me ”
She frowned , looking unsure “ Lucien ” she start to speak
“ Stop calling me that!” he yelled at her , cutting her off
His voice cut through the room and Selene's eyes widened, not in fear but confusion
The silence dragged on, his blood felt hot, not from the drug, but from the anger building inside him.
Everything felt heavy, who he was , who he used to be and the lie of the body he now lived in
“ You came here for the man who used to admire you” he said, still looking at her coldly “ That man us gone and you don't know it"
Selene blinked, her lips parting “ What are you saying?” she asked, her voice laced with confusion
He walked past her going to the door but he staggered and he grabbed the table to steady himself
The wine glass was still there, half full, filled with something more than just a wine.
Regret, want and poison
Lucien walked to the door slowly to steady, opening it wide
“ Get out” he said, trying to sound calm.
She stood frozen for a moment, then gathered her cloak in silence
As she passed him, she paused and glanced up, her eyes full of unshed tears
“ I don't know what happened to you” she said, her voice shaking and low “ But one day, you will wish you had someone beside you” she said walking out
He said nothing as he shut the door behind her.
Lucien stood still for a moment behind the door, listening to the echo of Selene's footsteps
The room felt quiet again but the air felt heavier now
He glanced at the untouched glass she left behind and the soft imprint she had made in his seat while he was away.
He walked over to the table and tipped the drink over. The dark liquid spilled across the the stone floor
She had tired to take control of him, in his own room, under his own roof
He gritted his teeth and moved across the room to the basin ,he bent down and splashed cold water in his face
He straightened up and stared at his reflection in the room, his eyes were steady again.
He was a man with too many enemies and not enough time
He dried his face and walked to his desk, he lit a candle , the candle flickered light across old scrolls and loose parchments
He grabbed a fresh piece of parchment and dipped the quill in ink
With a sharp stroke, he wrote a name
Aric
Than another
Elias
And below that, he wrote slowly
Selene
He paused, tapping the quill against the page
How many more names would he added before he was over?
His fingers curled tightly around the quill
They thought he was weak, recovering from poison, isolated and shaken
Let them think so, let them think whatever they want
He would answer soon
And when he did , none of them would see it coming.
