Ian would have intervened but fire and rescue had shown up and took over the situation. The cop seemed less interested in them now that he’d heard what they’d had to say and gotten their information. Mike was injured but not dead and eventually he was hauled away to the nearest emergency room. The police left. Gabe and Ian were left standing alone at the top of the steep slope, the geocache in front of them as one of the rescue personnel had been kind enough to pick it all up for them.
“Guess I’ll put it back then,” said Ian. He was still scared of the slope, especially after Mike had tumbled down it, but he couldn’t think of anything else to do, and in truth he was a little numb, too. Plus he didn’t want to appear cowardly in front of Gabe.
