Chapter 4

Yssa’s POV I woke up to the sunlight hitting my face. When I glanced at the clock, it was only 5:45 a.m.—still too early. I decided to go outside for a walk since my first class wouldn’t start until 7:40. It’s the first day of school, so I can’t risk being late. As I walked through the hallway of the girls’ dormitory, I noticed it was still quiet. Not a single student had come out of their rooms yet—probably still asleep at this hour. Without realizing it, I had wandered into a beautiful garden. Trees and flowers surrounded the place, and butterflies of different colors fluttered everywhere. I climbed onto the branch of a big tree near a lake and looked around. I couldn’t help but admire the view. In my entire life, I had never seen a garden this breathtaking. The lake was so clear, almost sparkling with what looked like glitters dancing on the surface. As I sat there in awe, I spotted two men talking near the wooded area of the academy. Both wore hoods that concealed their faces, making it impossible to recognize them. After a while, one of them left for the forest, while the other returned to the boys’ dormitory. A traitor, huh? You’re good at hiding, but I’ll find out who you are sooner or later. I didn’t notice the time passing until I checked my watch—it was already 6:59. I quickly climbed down from the tree and headed back to the dormitory as if I had seen nothing. No one can know what I witnessed. If they find out, I’m certain they’ll kill me. At times like these, the only person you can truly trust is yourself. Tsk, tsk. When I returned to my room, I went straight to the bathroom to shower. After putting on my uniform, I slipped on my black Converse shoes that I had bought recently. The moment I stepped out, Leigh greeted me with a smile. She looked me up and down before meeting my eyes again, giving me a chance to look into hers as well. She looks so pretty. The uniform really suits her, she thought to herself. Of course, she didn’t know I could read minds. I never told her about who I really was. I just shook my head at her childishness. I followed her to the dining hall, and we sat down. After breakfast, she volunteered to wash the dishes, so I waited for her so we could head to class together. “Come on, class starts in fifteen minutes!” she said, tugging me outside. She really loves pulling people around, huh? Tsk. I rolled my eyes but didn’t resist. When we got to the classroom, we sat at the back near the window. I chose the seat closest to the window so I wouldn’t get too bored. The door suddenly opened, and everyone fell silent. A man in his mid-thirties walked in. Fair-skinned, handsome—even if he was a little older. He scanned the room, and when he saw that everyone was present, he nodded repeatedly. Another weirdo. Who nods to themselves like that? Is this place full of lunatics? “Okay, I’m Arthor Penales, but you can call me Prof. Art. I’ll be your teacher for Ability Enhancement,” he introduced himself. Ability Enhancement? So that’s an actual subject here. Definitely different from the mortal world. “In this class, we’ll focus only on training your powers and magic. You’ll learn how to use them properly. We just need to be careful not to hurt anyone or damage anything in the academy due to lack of control,” he explained. Everyone nodded along—except me. “I’m so excited!” Leigh giggled, practically bouncing in her seat. I sighed. She really never changes. “Follow me to the training field,” Prof. Art instructed before leaving the room. Our classmates followed him immediately, but Leigh and I chose to lag behind. When we reached the training field, the others were already lined up, so we joined the line too. “Ms. Hinaia, what’s your ability?” Prof. Art asked the girl in front of me. I listened quietly while Leigh chatted away with some classmates. “I’m a healer,” Hinaia answered politely. Hmm, I think I already know what I’ll say when it’s my turn. From what I know, Leigh’s ability is levitation—the power to make objects float. It’s usually linked to the element of air, but since I also have that affinity, I can manage floating techniques too. “Next. Ms. Yhessa, what’s your ability?” Prof. Art asked, locking eyes with me. “Mind reading,” I answered formally, meeting his gaze. I didn’t try to read his thoughts though—I blocked my mind to keep myself from hearing anything. When I finished, he told me there was no need for me to practice since mind reading didn’t require training. For that, I was grateful. After a while, Leigh came over to say she was staying behind, so I decided to find a quiet place to rest. Soon, I discovered a secluded area with a long bench under a tree. I brushed it off, lay down, and closed my eyes. It wasn’t hot at all since the tall trees provided plenty of shade. “When are we going to snatch the two girls?” I heard a man whisper nearby. I immediately opened my eyes and scanned the surroundings. Two men stood behind a large tree, deep in conversation. Quietly, I crept closer to hear them better. “Tonight. They’ll go to the cafeteria for dinner, and we’ll wait for them on the way back,” one of them replied. So they planned to abduct someone, huh? Well, I won’t let them succeed. I didn’t stick around to hear the rest. I returned to the training field, determined to keep watch later that night. As soon as I got back, Leigh invited me to lunch at the cafeteria. I followed her without a word. The place was already crowded with students eating. We searched for a free table, but as we walked, a girl stretched out her leg to trip me. I noticed her plan but didn’t bother dodging. I let myself stumble and fall flat on the floor. Laughter erupted around us, but I ignored them and looked straight at the girl. Six of them sat together, their faces caked with powder and layers of colorful makeup. “What are you looking at?” she sneered. I just gave her a cold stare and turned away. “Hey! When I’m talking to you, you answer me. Don’t you dare turn your back on me, or you’ll regret it! Don’t you know who I am?” she shouted. Of course, I didn’t. I looked her in the eye, still calm. I had no intention of answering, but I couldn’t let the clown think she’d won. “Whoever you are, go look for someone who cares. I’m hungry,” I said flatly. Leigh stifled a laugh behind me, and a few students chuckled at my response. The clown of a girl was about to pour juice on me when someone stopped her. “Stop that, or I’ll report you to the Headmaster,” said a boy as he held her wrist. He released her hand, and the cafeteria fell silent, as if an angel had just walked in. Then, suddenly, shrieks filled the air. “Oh my god, it’s the B6!” “Kyaaah!” “Flame, be my boyfriend!” “Drenz, can you be mine?” “Blyn, why are you so handsome?” “Reiko, let’s make love!” “Flake, let’s date!” “Shirou, marry me!” The cafeteria erupted with screams. I didn’t even bother looking at them and simply turned away. When I glanced at Leigh, her jaw had dropped, and drool was practically dripping as she stared. Sigh. Girls. Oh my gosh, the B6 is right in front of me! Their looks are dangerously hot—panty-dropping levels! I shook my head at her thoughts and closed her mouth for her. That seemed to snap her back to reality, and she pinched me at the side. “Ouch,” I muttered, but she was still too distracted, her eyes glued to the boys. Taking advantage of her dazed state, I left her behind and ordered my food. Halfway through my meal, Leigh finally returned with her own tray. “Wow, you really ditched me there. But it’s fine—at least I got to see the faces of angels,” she said, laughing. I just shook my head at her craziness and continued eating. After lunch, we headed back to class. The entire way, Leigh kept rambling about the six boys. I ignored her and focused on figuring out how to make an excuse for later that night.
