Cold rain mixed with mud clogged Yun Zhongjun's eyes, nose, and mouth. Each ragged breath tasted of earth and the pervasive, acrid stench of scorched metal. He scrambled, rolled, clawed his way up the treacherous, rain-slicked slope. Behind him, the crushing pressure of something immense—a terrifying presence tearing through the storm.
The thing rising from the abyss was no natural creature. It resembled a colossal worm assembled from jagged, angular metal blocks, its surface crusted in thick, rust-brown sediment that glinted wetly with hints of dark metal beneath. It had no distinct limbs, moving like a segmented metal caterpillar propelled by countless whirling, razor-sharp metal tendrils churning rock and mud below! Each "lurch" was accompanied by deafening shrieks of grinding metal and the guttural roar of engines, cutting through the thunder.
Yun Zhongjun felt the ground tremble beneath him with its approach. He didn't dare look back; death's shadow clung like a leech. His grandfather's notes, the clan's curse, the compass's agitation—all faded, replaced by raw survival instinct. He grabbed at rock crevices, exposed roots, anything for purchase, oblivious to fingernails tearing and bleeding on stone.
Screeeeech—!
Another metallic scream ripped through the air, terrifyingly close! Yun Zhongjun felt a gust of wind laden with rust particles and icy rain buffet his back. He threw himself desperately behind a jutting boulder to his left.
CLANG!!!
A deafening impact! Where he had stood moments before, a tendril thick as a tree trunk, tipped with a massive spinning drill bit, slammed into the rock! Solid stone shattered like rotten wood! Shrapnel-like fragments peppered Yun Zhongjun's shelter.
Cold sweat instantly drenched his already soaked back. His heart hammered against his ribs. This wasn't pursuit; it was obliteration!
In that split second of reprieve, the compass against his chest erupted with unprecedented heat! It seared his flesh through layers of cloth! Simultaneously, an irresistible, violent pull surged from it—no longer a gentle guide, but like an invisible giant hand yanking him towards—the embedded, violently thrashing silver-white "dragon tail" on the cliff face!
Specifically, towards a newly torn, dark fissure near the tail's base, ripped open by the lightning strike and the construct's own violent struggle!
The fissure's edges were jagged, torn silver-white metal. Inside lay impenetrable darkness. The compass's pull came from within.
The metallic monstrosity wrenched its drill bit free. Its rust-crusted bulk shifted, engines snarling louder, countless spinning tendrils churning the mud. It had locked onto Yun Zhongjun's boulder! The next strike would be fatal.
He had no choice!
A flash of desperate resolve crossed Yun Zhongjun's eyes. He burst from behind the boulder, abandoning attempts to climb or hide, and charged headlong towards the dark fissure in the cliff face. Like a beast cornered, he summoned his last reserves, scrambling frantically up the crumbling, rain-slicked precipice towards the only possible sanctuary—a maw promising unknown terror.
ROOOOAAAAAR—!
The metallic beast bellowed fury, its engines shrieking! Several drill-tipped, blade-armed tendrils shot forward like death javelins, slicing through the rain towards Yun Zhongjun's back!
The icy breath of death!
Yun Zhongjun felt the deadly whistling at his nape! He lunged forward with every ounce of strength, diving headfirst towards the fissure just steps away!
RIIIIP!
A searing pain tore through his calf! A spinning blade on one tendril grazed his leg, shredding fabric and flesh, spraying blood mixed with rain! Agony blinded him momentarily!
But his momentum carried him forward, tumbling into the dark, cold embrace of the metal fissure!
BOOM! CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!
As his body vanished into darkness, the lethal tendrils hammered against the cliff face outside the fissure! Rock and twisted metal exploded outward like shrapnel! The cliff groaned in protest!
Yun Zhongjun crashed onto a cold, hard surface. The impact made stars dance before his eyes; his calf burned. He ignored it, scrambling onto his back, staring in horror at the fissure entrance.
The monstrous tendrils writhed outside like sharks scenting blood, probing and slamming against the narrow opening! Their drill and blade tips scraped and shrieked against the metal edges, spraying blinding sparks! The eerie fissure flashed with the violent light, illuminating Yun Zhongjun's ashen face.
Mercifully, the tear was too narrow for the thick tendrils. They thrashed and battered several times, shedding more metal and rock dust, roaring their impotent rage, but failed to breach.
Temporarily safe!
Yun Zhongjun slumped against the cold, slick metal inner wall, gasping for air, his heart still pounding wildly. Rain dripped from his hair and face, mixing with blood from his leg, forming a dark puddle. Each breath aggravated the burn on his chest—where the compass had seared him.
He instinctively reached inside his robe, touching the compass. It was no longer scalding, but strangely, steadily warm. It seemed to hum faintly. The central blue gem glowed steadily, casting a soft but clear light that pushed back the immediate darkness.
By its glow, Yun Zhongjun surveyed his surroundings.
This was no natural cave!
He stood inside a vast, downward-sloping metal corridor. The walls, ceiling, and floor were made of a smooth, cold, silver-white material—neither metallic nor jade-like, unnervingly hard yet possessing a biological resilience. The surfaces were covered in incomprehensible, intricate geometric patterns and protruding pipes, like the veins and sinews of some unimaginable machine. The air reeked of rust and burnt metal, but deeper within, another scent lingered—like stale machine oil mixed with ozone.
The corridor plunged downward into impenetrable darkness. The compass needle, no longer trembling wildly, pointed steadily into that abyss. The blue gem's light seemed to resonate faintly with a distant, almost imperceptible blue glow emanating from the corridor's depths.
Yun Zhongjun forced himself up, gritting his teeth against the pain in his leg. He tore a strip from his robe, tightly binding the wound. He retrieved his hunting spear—the dark metal tip looking even more mysterious in the compass's eerie light. Taking a deep breath, he willed himself calm.
Outside lay the metallic terror; retreat was sealed. Ahead lay the compass's path, his grandfather's lifelong secret, the source of the Yun clan's century-long curse. He had no choice.
Gripping the spear, cradling the glowing compass in his other hand, Yun Zhongjun began to walk—slowly, cautiously—deeper into the metal throat of the beast.
His footsteps echoed unnervingly loud in the vast silence. The corridor curved with organic fluidity, descending steadily. The geometric patterns on the walls shimmered faintly in the blue light, seeming almost alive. The scent of old oil and ozone grew stronger.
After walking for what felt like an incense stick's time, Yun Zhongjun felt he must be deep within the mountain's core. The corridor seemed to end, opening into a vast space.
The compass light pierced the gloom first, revealing a sight that stole Yun Zhongjun's breath.
He stood on a narrow metal platform jutting from the corridor mouth, suspended on the edge of an immense spherical chamber. Its scale defied comprehension; the domed ceiling vanished into darkness far beyond the compass's reach.
But it was the object suspended at the chamber's center that froze his soul.
It was the colossal, roughly spindle-shaped main body of the metallic construct! Most of it remained embedded within massive, crystal-like rock formations that pulsed with the same eerie blue light, but a significant portion was exposed within this cavernous space.
The exposed section was armored in massive, overlapping, intricately interlocked silver-white metal "scales." Each scale was enormous, its edges razor-sharp, its structure bewilderingly complex. This was the main body of the "dragon tail" he'd seen from the cliff! Up close, its unnatural, cold mechanical nature was undeniable. These titanic metal scales weren't static; they shifted and adjusted with agonizing slowness, each minute movement accompanied by a deep metallic sigh and the leakage of denser blue light from their seams.
This blue glow was the chamber's primary illumination—not fire, but like streams of contained, flowing energy, pulsing silently through the metal behemoth and the crystal rock that held it.
This was no divine dragon! This was a colossal, unfathomable Mechanical Body—slumbering (or imprisoned?) within the very heart of Zhongnan Mountain!
Yun Zhongjun stood on the suspended platform, insignificant as dust. Gazing up at the construct that shattered all reason, feeling its deep vibrations with every "breath," a wave of primal dread and awe washed over him. His grandfather's cryptic notes—"neither dragon nor demon," "light," "body neither metal nor stone," "roaring like thunder"—now had terrifying, concrete meaning.
The Yun clan's century-long curse... its source was here! Within this cold, slumbering mechanical leviathan!
The compass in his hand remained steadily warm, its needle unwavering, pointing deep down into the spherical chamber. Yun Zhongjun leaned cautiously over the platform edge, following its direction.
Below, near the base of the colossal mechanical form, bathed in the blue glow, structures emerged that were clearly artificial. Massive platforms and scaffolds, also of silver-white metal, and peculiar, columnar objects bristling with complex ports rose from the darkness like petrified trees. They encircled and connected to the main body, forming a complex, bizarre "foundation."
At the center of this "foundation," a relatively flat area glowed with a different light.
Suddenly, the compass flared hot again! Not the violent burn of before, but a surge of intense resonance! The blue gem blazed with light, momentarily overpowering the chamber's ambient glow!
Simultaneously, at the center of that flat area far below, a point of identical blue light flared to life! Like a beacon in the dark, answering the compass's call!
Yun Zhongjun's heart leapt! He stared at the distant light. One thought consumed him: Down! I must go down! The answer lies there!
He scanned his surroundings. The edge of his platform had metallic protrusions—rails or conduits—that snaked downward. Steep and perilous, but the only path.
As he prepared to climb, an utterly different sound pierced the chamber's silence: a faint, distinct click... click... click...
It came from his left!
Every hair on Yun Zhongjun's body stood on end! He whirled around, the compass light stabbing like a blade towards the sound source!
The light revealed, dozens of yards away on the curved chamber wall, a circular "portal" that had been seamlessly flush with the metal surface. It was now sliding silently inward!
Beyond the portal wasn't darkness, but a soft, unnatural white light.
And there, etched against the light on the portal's threshold, was the unmistakable silhouette of a human figure!
The shadow stood motionless, bathed in the inner light, seemingly... watching the intruder.
