Chapter 3

1170 Words
After a long day at the office, Ava made her way home, feeling a mix of exhaustion and satisfaction. She had managed to complete all the tasks Dion and Sophie had assigned her, and she felt confident that she had made a good impression. However, as she approached her apartment door, her heart sank. There, taped to the door, was a bright orange eviction notice. The bold letters were impossible to miss: "Eviction Notice: Immediate Action Required." Ava's hands trembled as she ripped the notice from the door and read it. Her worst fears were confirmed. Despite her best efforts, her overdue rent had caught up with her, and she was being evicted immediately. She felt a wave of panic and helplessness wash over her. She had nowhere else to go. She pushed the door open, the familiar creak of the hinges sounding more ominous than ever. The apartment was small and modest, but it was her sanctuary. Now, it felt like a trap closing in on her. She sank onto the couch, the eviction notice still clutched in her hand, and buried her face in her hands. For a few moments, Ava let herself feel the weight of her situation. The tears came, unbidden, as she thought about the irony of her day. She had impressed Dion and Sophie, but here she was, about to lose her home. The money from her new job wouldn't come in time to save her from this immediate crisis. After a few minutes, she wiped her eyes and took a deep breath. She couldn't afford to wallow in despair. She had to find a solution, and fast. Grabbing her phone, she began scrolling through her contacts, thinking of who she could call for help. Family was out of the question, and her friends were in similar financial situations. Then she remembered an old acquaintance from college, Lisa, who had always been kind to her. They hadn't talked in a while, but Ava decided to take a chance. She dialed Lisa's number, her heart pounding with each ring. "Hello?" Lisa's voice came through the line, warm and familiar. "Lisa, it's Ava," she began, trying to keep her voice steady. "I know it's been a while, but I need your help. I've been evicted, and I have nowhere to go." There was a brief pause, and then Lisa responded, "Oh my god, Ava. I'm so sorry to hear that. Look, I don't have a lot of space, but you can crash on my couch until you get back on your feet. Come over right now if you need to." Relief flooded through Ava, and she felt a glimmer of hope. "Thank you so much, Lisa. I'll be over soon." She hung up and quickly began packing a bag with essentials. As she left her apartment for what might be the last time, she felt a mix of gratitude and determination. She had a lot to prove to herself and to Dion and Sophie, and she wasn't going to let this setback stop her. The next morning, Ava arrived at the office even earlier than usual, determined to make a strong impression despite the turmoil in her personal life. She set up her workspace, ensuring everything was in order before checking her email. As expected, there was a message from Dion and Sophie, listing her tasks for the day. She opened the email and began to read: --- **From:** Dion Lancaster **To:** Ava **Subject:** Tasks for Today Ava, Here are your tasks for today: 1. **Prepare a report on our latest market trends.** You'll find the necessary data in the shared drive. Ensure the report is comprehensive and ready for our meeting at 11 AM. 2. **Coordinate the logistics for our upcoming client event.** Contact the venue, confirm the catering, and ensure all arrangements are in place. 3. **Review and organize Sophie's correspondence.** She has several important emails that need responses drafted by the end of the day. 4. **Compile a summary of our latest social media analytics.** We need a detailed breakdown of our performance across all platforms. Please prioritize these tasks accordingly. Thank you, Dion and Sophie --- Ava quickly jotted down the list, prioritizing the report on market trends since the meeting was only a few hours away. She began gathering the data, immersing herself in charts and graphs. Her focus was intense, driven by a desire to prove her reliability. As she worked, her phone buzzed with a message from Lisa. She paused to read it: --- **From:** Lisa **To:** Ava **Subject:** Hope You're Settling In Hey Ava, Just wanted to check in and see how you're doing. I know things are tough right now, but you're welcome to stay as long as you need. If you need help looking for a new place, let me know. I'm here for you. Best, Lisa --- Ava smiled, feeling a bit more at ease knowing she had support. She sent a quick reply thanking Lisa and promised to start looking for a new place as soon as she could. Returning to her tasks, Ava completed the market trends report just in time for the meeting. She printed out copies and delivered them to Dion and Sophie, who were both in their offices preparing. "Good job, Ava," Dion said as he glanced over the report. "This is exactly what we needed." "Thank you," Ava replied, feeling a sense of accomplishment. "I'll get started on the other tasks now." She moved on to coordinating the client event, making a series of phone calls to confirm details with the venue and catering company. Her organizational skills were put to the test, but she managed to get everything in place. Next, she tackled Sophie's correspondence. Sorting through the emails, Ava drafted thoughtful responses, making sure to capture the appropriate tone and information. She sent the drafts to Sophie for approval, knowing how particular she could be. Finally, Ava dove into the social media analytics. She compiled data from various platforms, creating a comprehensive summary that highlighted key performance metrics and insights. By the end of the day, she had everything ready to present. Just as she was about to leave, Sophie called her into her office. "Ava, the emails you drafted are perfect. Thank you for being so thorough." "You're welcome," Ava said, feeling a wave of relief. "I'm glad I could help." "One more thing," Sophie added, her tone softening slightly. "If you need any assistance with your living situation, let us know. We value your dedication and want to make sure you're able to focus on your work without undue stress." Ava was taken aback by the offer but appreciated the gesture. "Thank you, Sophie. That means a lot." As she left the office, Ava felt a renewed sense of determination. She still needed to find a new place to stay, but with the support of Lisa and the recognition from Dion and Sophie, she felt more confident that she could handle whatever came her way.
