As Ava made her way home, her thoughts drifted back to Sophie's surprising offer of assistance with her living situation. She hadn't mentioned her eviction to anyone at work, and the only person who knew about it was Lisa.
"How did Sophie know?" Ava wondered aloud, her mind racing through the possibilities. Had Lisa said something? It didn't seem likely; Lisa was discreet and knew how much Ava valued her privacy. Besides, Ava had only confided in her the previous night.
The more Ava thought about it, the more uneasy she felt. She replayed her interactions over the past couple of days, trying to recall if she had let anything slip. But nothing came to mind. She couldn't shake the feeling that someone at work might have found out somehow.
As she walked, she decided to give Lisa a call to see if she had any insights. She dialed Lisa's number, and after a few rings, Lisa picked up.
"Hey, Ava," Lisa answered cheerfully. "Everything okay?"
"Hey, Lisa. Yeah, I'm fine," Ava replied, trying to keep her tone light. "I just had a weird conversation at work. Sophie, one of my bosses, offered to help with my living situation. The thing is, I didn't tell anyone at the office about my eviction. Do you have any idea how she might have found out?"
There was a brief pause before Lisa spoke. "That's strange. I didn't mention anything to anyone, and I can't imagine how else they would know. Maybe they guessed something was up if they noticed you seemed stressed or if they overheard something?"
Ava nodded, though Lisa couldn't see her. "Maybe. It just feels odd. I'll have to be more careful, I guess."
"Yeah, definitely. But if they offered to help, maybe it's a good thing. They might just want to support you because they see your potential."
"Maybe," Ava said, though she still felt uneasy. "Thanks, Lisa. I'll figure it out."
"Anytime. And remember, my couch is yours for as long as you need it."
Ava thanked Lisa again and hung up, feeling a bit better but still puzzled. She decided to keep her eyes and ears open at work, just in case there was something more to Sophie's knowledge than met the eye.
By the time she reached Lisa's apartment, she had resolved to stay focused on her job and continue performing at her best. She had come too far to let this mystery distract her from proving herself to Dion and Sophie. If they were watching her closely, she would make sure they saw nothing but her dedication and capability.
Over the next few days, Ava poured herself into her work, doing everything she could to keep her personal struggles from affecting her performance. She arrived early, stayed late, and made sure every task was completed to the highest standard. Dion and Sophie seemed pleased with her efforts, and she was determined to keep it that way.
One afternoon, as Ava was organizing files in her small office, Sophie appeared in the doorway. "Ava, do you have a moment?" she asked, her tone uncharacteristically gentle.
"Of course, Sophie," Ava replied, trying to keep her nerves in check. "What can I do for you?"
Sophie stepped inside and closed the door behind her. "I wanted to talk to you about something personal," she began, her eyes meeting Ava's with a concerned look. "I know you've been going through a tough time with your living situation."
Ava's heart skipped a beat. She had been so careful not to let anything slip at work. "I... I appreciate your concern, Sophie," she stammered. "But I'm handling it. I'll find a new place soon."
Sophie nodded, her expression softening. "I believe you will. But in the meantime, Dion and I have been discussing it, and we'd like to offer you a temporary place to stay. We have a guest house on our property that's currently unused. It would give you a stable place to live while you sort things out."
Ava was stunned. The offer was incredibly generous, but she couldn't help but feel uneasy about accepting it. "Sophie, I don't know what to say. This is so kind of you, but I don't want to impose."
"You're not imposing," Sophie insisted. "You're part of our team, and we want to support you. Besides, it's just temporary until you get back on your feet. We know how hard you've been working, and we don't want you to have to worry about where you're going to sleep at night."
Ava took a deep breath, weighing her options. The guest house would provide her with much-needed stability and allow her to focus entirely on her work. And yet, she still wondered how Sophie knew about her eviction.
"Thank you, Sophie," Ava said finally, her voice filled with gratitude. "I appreciate this more than you know. But, if I may ask, how did you find out about my situation?"
Sophie gave her a reassuring smile. "Let's just say I have a knack for noticing when something's not quite right. You don't have to worry about the details. Just know that we want to help."
Ava nodded, still curious but deciding not to press further. "Alright. Thank you again. I'll accept your offer."
"Good," Sophie said, standing up. "I'll have the guest house prepared for you. You can move in as soon as you're ready."
As Sophie left the office, Ava felt a mixture of relief and apprehension. She was grateful for the support, but the mystery of how her bosses knew about her situation still lingered in her mind. Nevertheless, she resolved to make the most of this opportunity and continue proving her worth to Dion and Sophie.
