Chapter 1

Ava tightened her grip on her worn-out leather purse as she stepped into the gleaming office building. The lobby buzzed with activity, a stark contrast to the silence of her modest apartment. She took a deep breath, steeling herself for what lay ahead. Two days ago, her landlord had given her an ultimatum: pay the overdue rent or face eviction. Desperation had driven her to a job ad she stumbled upon, promising immediate work with substantial pay. The catch? She'd be working as a personal assistant for Dion and Sophie Lancaster, heirs to the Lancaster conglomerate and notorious in the business world for their demanding nature. As she approached the reception desk, the receptionist gave her a once-over before directing her to the 20th floor. The elevator ride seemed endless, each ding of the floor indicator heightening her anxiety. Finally, the doors opened to a lavish office suite. Dion Lancaster, tall and impeccably dressed, stood with his back to the entrance, discussing something with his sister Sophie, who was perched on the edge of a sleek, modern desk. Both turned to face Ava as she stepped into the room. "Ah, you must be Ava," Dion said, his voice smooth but with an edge of authority. "We were expecting you." Sophie, equally elegant but with a piercing gaze, sized Ava up. "We don't have time for formalities," she said, cutting to the chase. "We need someone who can handle our schedules, coordinate our meetings, and manage... well, everything. Can you do that?" Ava nodded, feeling the weight of their expectations. "Yes, I can." "Good," Dion replied. "You'll start immediately. We have a board meeting in an hour, and I need you to gather and organize the presentation materials." Sophie added, "And I need you to pick up my dry cleaning, confirm my lunch reservation, and make sure my notes for the marketing campaign are ready." Ava's head spun with the list of tasks, but she couldn't afford to hesitate. "Understood," she said, trying to sound confident. As she set off on her first task, she felt a mix of determination and trepidation. Working for the Lancasters was going to be a challenge, but with her back against the wall, she had no choice but to prove herself and earn the money she so desperately needed. Ava hurried to the small office space that had been hastily designated as hers. The room was stark, with a simple desk, a computer, and a filing cabinet. She wasted no time, sitting down at the desk and booting up the computer. As the machine whirred to life, she rummaged through the papers left on her desk, hoping to find some clue about the presentation materials Dion needed. Her heart sank when she realized there was no clear indication of what she was looking for. Taking a deep breath, she reminded herself that she couldn't afford to fail. She quickly pulled up Dion's email account, searching through the recent messages for any attachments or references to the board meeting. After a few tense minutes, she found it—a detailed email thread between Dion and his senior executives discussing the upcoming presentation. She scanned through the messages, noting down key points and pulling up attached documents. Her fingers flew over the keyboard as she organized the slides, adding graphs and charts that highlighted the company's recent performance. The clock on the wall seemed to tick louder with each passing minute. She knew she had less than an hour to ensure everything was perfect. As she worked, she made a list of the most important metrics and figures, double-checking for accuracy. Just as she was about to finalize the presentation, Dion appeared at her door. "How's it coming along?" he asked, his tone neutral but his eyes scrutinizing her work. "Almost done," Ava replied, her voice steady despite her nerves. "I'm just adding the last few details." Dion walked over to the desk, glancing at the screen. He nodded, seemingly satisfied. "Good. Make sure the slides transition smoothly and the data is up-to-date. The board members will expect nothing less." Ava nodded, her focus laser-sharp as she made the final adjustments. As Dion left to prepare for the meeting, she took a deep breath and reviewed the entire presentation one last time. Everything seemed in order. She saved the file and quickly sent it to Dion's email, then transferred it to a USB drive for backup. With mere minutes to spare, she hurried to the conference room, setting up the projector and ensuring the slides were ready to go. As the board members began to file in, she stepped back, allowing Dion to take center stage. Dion glanced at her and gave a barely perceptible nod of approval. Ava exhaled a sigh of relief. The first hurdle was over, but she knew this was just the beginning of her challenging new role.
