Chapter Three
(Amara POV)
I shouldn’t be here.
That was the first thought that hit me as I stood there, frozen.
The door was slightly open, just enough for me to see inside.
Dante stood in the middle of the room.
Calm.
Like this was normal.
Like pointing a gun at someone was just… another part of his day.
My breath caught in my throat.
The man in front of him was on his knees.
Shaking.
“Please…” the man’s voice broke. “I told you everything I know. I swear—”
Dante tilted his head slightly.
Almost like he was… bored.
“Did you?” he asked quietly.
“Yes! I did, I swear—”
The gun didn’t move.
Not even a little.
My fingers curled slightly against the wall as I leaned closer without realizing.
I couldn’t stop watching.
I didn’t want to watch.
But I couldn’t look away either.
“Then why,” Dante said slowly, “do I feel like you’re lying to me?”
The man’s face went pale.
“I’m not! I swear, I’m not—”
Dante sighed.
Like he was tired of hearing him speak.
Like this was taking too long.
For a second—
Everything went quiet.
Then—
The gunshot rang out.
Loud.
Sharp.
I flinched so hard my back hit the wall.
My heart stopped.
The man dropped instantly.
Just like that.
Like he was nothing.
Like he didn’t matter.
My breath came out shaky, uneven, my hands trembling as I tried to process what I had just seen.
He—
He didn’t hesitate.
He didn’t think twice.
He just—
Killed him.
My stomach twisted violently.
I stepped back without thinking.
And that’s when—
The floor creaked.
My heart dropped.
No.
No, no, no—
Dante’s head turned.
Slowly.
Too slowly.
And then—
His eyes met mine.
For a second, neither of us moved.
I couldn’t breathe.
I couldn’t think.
I couldn’t do anything except stand there like an i***t who just got caught.
He didn’t look surprised.
That was the worst part.
He just looked at me.
Calm.
Cold.
Like this changed nothing.
Like I was the one who made a mistake.
My body reacted before my brain did.
I ran.
I didn’t even think.
I just turned and ran as fast as I could, my heart pounding so loud I could hear it in my ears.
Barefoot.
Panicked.
I didn’t know where I was going.
I just needed to get away.
I turned a corner—
And slammed into something.
Strong.
Solid.
A hand grabbed my arm.
Tight.
“Running again?”
My breath hitched.
Slowly—
I looked up.
Dante.
He wasn’t even breathing hard.
Like he didn’t chase me.
Like he already knew where I would go.
“I—I wasn’t—” my voice shook badly.
“Stop lying,” he said quietly.
His grip tightened slightly.
I winced.
“You saw something you shouldn’t have,” he added.
My heart felt like it was going to burst.
“I didn’t mean to,” I whispered quickly. “I was just looking for clothes, I swear—”
“Silence.”
I shut up immediately.
My chest rose and fell rapidly as I tried to breathe.
He stared at me for a few seconds.
Thinking.
Calculating.
Then—
His hand dropped.
“Come.”
