The intercom buzzed again!
"Zanele Khumalo! Open the door, Kago! This is for Amahle's safety!"
Amahle was still half out of the dress! The scar on her back was exposed.
Kago looked at the screen.
Zanele was smiling. Too calm.
In her hand: a folder.
Dlamini, Amahle. Adoption records. Sealed.
"You know the rules," Kago said. "We don't open the door. Not alone."
Amahle zipped her dress. Fast.
"What if she calls security?"
"Then we let her." Kago's voice didn't change. "Themba paid to keep that sealed 7 years ago."
Footsteps.
Knocking.
"Kago. I know you're in there."
Kago hit the intercom.
"You have 30 seconds. Then I call security."
Zanele's laugh came through.
"You don't want that. Not with your wife's file."
Kago opened the door. A crack. Chain on.
Zane held up the folder.
"Then don't let me in. But you'll want page 3."
Name: Amahle Dlamini
DBO: 17/03/2019
Legal Guardian at Age 17: Lindiwe Mokoena
Amahle's knees buckled.
Kago caught her.
"Lindiwe signed it the night she died," Zanele said. "11:47 PM. 13 minutes before the crash."
Silence.
"If Amahle is Lindiwe's legal heir..." Zanele said.
"She inherits 30%," Kago finished.
Amahle stared at Zanele.
"Why are you telling us this?"
"Because Themba thinks I have the original." Zanele closed the folder. "I don't."
She looked at Amahle.
"You do."
Amahle's hand went to her throat. The silver chain.
"The necklace, " Zanele said. "Lindiwe gave it to you before the accident. The papers are inside the locket."
The doorbell rang again.
Not Zanele.
Heavy Footsteps.
Zanele's smile dropped.
"Too late."
Kago slammed the door.
Locked it.
Themba's voice came through the wood.
"Open up, brother. I heard you have my niece."
