The Breaking Point

880 Words
The chamber shook again. Harder this time. Chunks of stone fell from the ceiling, crashing against the cracked floor. Dust filled the air as the glowing runes along the walls flickered wildly. Aria staggered slightly. Her chest burned like fire. Inside her mind, the whisper returned. You cannot cage me forever. She pressed her hands against her head. “Make it stop…” Lucien grabbed her arm quickly. “Aria, focus on me.” Her breathing was uneven. “It’s inside my head.” Azryth’s massive eyes watched carefully from the abyss. “Yes,” the dragon said calmly. “The entity is stirring.” Lucien shot the dragon a sharp glare. “This is your fault.” Azryth lifted its head slightly. “The seal was already weakening.” The chamber trembled again. Another crack split across the floor. The glowing symbols beneath them pulsed faster now, like a heartbeat. Aria dropped to one knee. Lucien knelt beside her immediately. “Stay with me.” She squeezed her eyes shut. The voice in her mind was louder now. Clearer. You feel it, don’t you? Aria shook her head desperately. “No…” Lucien held her shoulders. “What is it saying?” Her voice trembled. “It says… it says I belong to it.” Lucien’s expression darkened. “That’s a lie.” Azryth spoke again from below. “Not entirely.” Lucien looked ready to attack the dragon. “Enough.” But Azryth continued calmly. “The entity bound within her is ancient. It recognizes the vessel meant to contain it.” Aria forced her eyes open. “Stop calling me that.” Azryth tilted its head. “Very well.” A pause. “Aria.” Hearing her name from a dragon felt deeply unsettling. “You must decide.” Lucien stood slowly. “She needs time.” Azryth’s golden eyes shifted toward the growing cracks in the chamber. “You do not have time.” As if proving the point— The floor exploded outward. A surge of dark energy burst from the abyss, swirling through the chamber like a violent storm. Aria screamed as the power inside her reacted instantly. Light flared around her hands. Lucien stepped back slightly, stunned. Her energy was rising rapidly. Far beyond what he had seen before. Aria stared at her glowing hands in panic. “I’m not doing this!” Lucien’s voice was urgent. “The entity is pushing through your power.” Azryth rumbled quietly. “The prison is collapsing.” Aria felt something shift deep inside her. A pressure. A door beginning to open. The ancient voice echoed in her mind again. Let me out. “No!” she shouted. Lucien moved closer again. “Aria, listen to me.” Her breathing was frantic. “I can’t hold it.” “You don’t have to fight it alone.” Azryth spoke from the abyss. “Or you could stop fighting entirely.” Lucien turned sharply. “She is not releasing you.” The dragon’s massive wings shifted slowly. “Then the other one will release itself.” The chamber trembled again. Aria cried out as a surge of dark energy burst from her chest. Lucien’s eyes widened. “That’s impossible…” The darkness swirled around her like smoke. Her power was no longer just light. Something else was mixing with it. Something ancient. Something dangerous. Aria’s voice came out strained. “I can feel it breaking free.” Lucien stepped closer. “Look at me.” She forced her eyes toward him. “You are stronger than it.” Her voice shook. “You don’t know that.” Lucien held her gaze. “I do.” Azryth watched the moment quietly. Then spoke. “Your faith in her is admirable.” Lucien didn’t look away from Aria. “But misplaced.” The dragon’s golden eyes narrowed. “Because the truth is…” The chamber suddenly went still. The dark energy around Aria froze in place. Lucien felt a chill run down his spine. Something had changed. Aria slowly lifted her head. Her glowing eyes looked different. Not just bright. Ancient. Lucien’s voice dropped to a whisper. “Aria…?” When she spoke— Two voices came out at once. Hers. And something deeper. “I am done waiting.” Lucien’s heart stopped. Azryth’s eyes widened slightly in the darkness. “Well,” the dragon murmured. “That escalated quickly.” Aria—no, the thing speaking through her—slowly stood. Dark energy coiled around her like living shadows. Lucien reached for her. “Aria, fight it.” Her head tilted slightly. The ancient voice answered calmly. “She cannot hear you.” Lucien stepped back, drawing his blade. “You will not take her.” The entity smiled through Aria’s face. “Oh…” The chamber shook violently again. “You misunderstand.” More cracks spread through the floor. The seal below shattered piece by piece. The entity’s voice deepened. “I already have.” Azryth shifted in the abyss, watching carefully. “Well.” The dragon’s voice was thoughtful. “That’s a problem.” Lucien didn’t respond. Because the person standing in front of him… Was no longer Aria. And the real battle had just begun.
