Mila Mila hadn’t planned to leave her apartment. She hadn’t planned to put on a hoodie, shove her feet into worn sneakers, and step into the night with her phone clenched in her hand like a lifeline. But sleep refused to come. Every time she closed her eyes, her mind replayed moments she’d tried to bury. Adrian standing silently beside her on the sidewalk. The way his voice softened when he said her name. The promise in his eyes when he said he would try. She rolled onto her back and stared at the ceiling. The clock read 12:17 a.m. She exhaled sharply. This was stupid. This was reckless. This was exactly how people got hurt. Still… the loneliness pressed heavier than fear. Her phone buzzed suddenly. Her heart jumped. Unknown number. She hesitated, then answered. “Hello?”
