Chapter 3

{Jenna}   Tyler left dropped me off unwillingly back at my apartment. He wanted to take me to the hospital but I refused. The reason for being light-headed was him and I couldn’t deny it. I felt slowly pulled towards him and there was only one reason for it. He was my mate.   My aunt only talked to me briefly about mates saying, “When you find your mate you feel attracted to him. Foxes don’t smell the scent like other species, just attraction. Foxes have more of a chance of having a mate of another species. But sometimes mates bring heartbreak.” I would always ask her ‘why?’ at the end but she always responded, “One day you will know.”   I sighed. What now? Things started to spiral out of control. I tried to lead a life that a human would so I could forget out my foxy side. But now it won’t work because my mate surely wouldn’t leave me be.    ‘But did you see his build, Mmmmm I would love to run my hands through those abs.’   I jumped up surprised to hear from her for the first time in forever. ‘Why and how did you come back Angel?’   ‘Why so surprised? Ya’ know after pushing me out of your life forever I finally gave up on you. But thankfully our mate appeared to snap you out of your delusional life.’ Angel, my long lost fox sneered.   ‘Now I’m back and badder than ever. You won’t get rid of me easily.’ She chuckled and disappeared into my thoughts.   I guess now having gold hair won’t help anymore. I dyed my hair blonde some time ago because if I kept my ruby red hair then I would be instantly recognized as a fox. Wolves clearly despise foxes and kill them on sight. That’s why we were blessed with being able to hide our scent. I hid my scent and changed it to a human scent. Most foxes have red hair but mine was even brighter than any other fox. Most of my income went into disguising my hair. But it was a matter of life or death. What else was I supposed to do??   I really hoped my mate wasn’t a wolf but I did hear him growl earlier so I might not have much luck. Wolves that have foxes as mates usually keep mistresses or reject them. The majority of the fox population die of heartbreak. No one wants us.   But just in case I’ll keep my gold hair, don’t want to attract any unwanted attention. Foxes are known for their looks. Meaning, we’re extremely attractive. But I don’t see myself like that. I look like I haven’t eaten in days, which is the truth because it’s not like I have all the money in the world for all of my needs.   ‘Stop daydreaming! Can’t you smell danger in the air?’ Angel snapped.   I took a quick whiff of the air and sure enough, there was a danger.    ‘We have to make a run for it!’ I exclaimed to her, fear suddenly taking over.   ‘Stop being such a scaredy-cat. Foxes are strong and quick to trick. Now stop being a human and be what you truly are...a FOX.’   ‘B-but I can’t morph!’ 'Think! Plan like the cunning fox you are!"   I whiffed the air again and danger was closer than ever. I ran into the bathroom and sprayed some perfume on me- hiding my fox scent and replacing it with human scent. I stared at myself in the mirror just to make sure there were no red hair strands that would give me away. There was no doubt that whatever was getting closer was coming for me.   I was unfortunate enough to have a first story apartment. If there was going to be a fight then I should be outside- waiting. I opened the back door and stepped outside. Early in the year, I had placed two chairs and a table with a vase filled with roses in the middle. I loved the color red and my apartment was filled with red. I just hope that the only red I’d be seeing would be my blood.   I sat down in one of the chairs noticing red my hair was. All of my fear was gone. I was sick of being the puny scared “human”. Now I’ll let out my real self.  “How good it is to be back,” I sighed.   My back was facing the woods so when I heard  paws approaching me I grabbed a rose, took a whiff and said, “Trying to sneak up on a poor innocent civilian I see?”   I clearly caught them by surprise since they stopped walking up to me. I stood up and turned around, sure enough, there were 4 Rogue wolves.   “Rogues,” I say, disgust rolling off my tongue.   “Looks like we have a cunning fox here.”  A man intervened as he stepped out of the woods.   “What fox? I’m just a human.” I faked being scared which aggravated them.   "Don't lie, how else would you be able to detect us from a distance," the man pointed out and the four wolves nodded, "Now, reveal yourself!"   I chuckled darkly and snapped my fingers. Soon, my gold hair turned Ruby red, my skin turned from tan to white as snow, my nails grew longer and turned ruby red, my lips turned red, and my eyes turned red. It was one of my many forms.   "Why we have a special fox over here now do we?" The man faked a question to the rogues, "but we're not here for this."   "Then what are you here for cause believe me Rogues are so boring," I pouted.   "We're here because you're the Alpha's mate?" The man replied. I was surprised but I didn't show it. Of course! Every Alpha has enemies and would come after his or her's mate.    "Now are you assuming things about me, Benjamin?"    He raised an eyebrow, "Of course you know my name and probably everything about all of us," he pointed to the wolves, "I would expect no less of an elite fox."   I sneered, "It's the one thing my aunt made sure I never forgot."   I was an elite fox. They were rare but my aunt trained me though she never said anything about my origins. But now that my true self was back, I was prepared.   "Now, I saw you at that human store. The Alpha was clearly intrigued by you, meaning you were his mate no less."   "And? Is that it? Then I shall be leaving now." I almost snapped my fingers in order to teleport but all 4 rogues snarled.   "You see...I need to kill you."   Kill me? But why?
