Eric stood frozen in the apartment, suddenly feeling as though the place had doubled in size overnight. It was too quiet and empty. And somehow, his heart felt exactly the same. Right. He could call her. It took him several tries to pull his phone out of his pocket. His fingers wouldn't stop trembling. He dialed Barbara's number, only to be greeted by a string of cold, mechanical beeps. He switched to social media and sent her a message. A red exclamation point appeared instantly.
