Emily’s POV And he did help me. When I’d said I could take a cab, Dr. Ortega had insisted on driving me home himself, going out of his way just to ensure I’d get back safely. In his car, the quiet hum of the engine had been almost soothing, filling the spaces where words felt too heavy. I leaned my head back, allowing myself the smallest moment to feel… cared for. Someone had done something kind for me without asking anything in return, and it felt like a lifeline, even though I could barely trust it. After I mentioned the occasional pain I’d been feeling, he’d promptly prescribed me some medication, easing my worries about my baby’s health. Then he led me to a small washroom at the hospital, where I washed my face, feeling the cold water splash against my skin, grounding me in reality.
