Chapter 5

1265 Words
Leo Willow is going to kill me. She’s either going to run me over with a tractor, get a shotgun or chase me with an axe, but I’ll deserve any of those things. “You okay, bro?” Romeo, my private investigator, is sitting across from me, placing his beer bottle on the table. “This is a drug that I sell to Mike for his research.” I stare at the report paper in front of me. If I had laser eyes, I would have burned the paper to a crisp. My grip on the whiskey glass is tight, and the f*****g noise at this club irritates the s**t out of me. “Leo? I know that this is a lot, but...” “I’m going to kill him,” I grumble. “No,” He shakes his head. “You will get arrested.” “I don’t care.” “I need you to think about this, Leo,” he pleads. “I can’t believe that I did this to her,” I mumble absent-mindedly. “Who?” “No one,” I snap. He stares at me, silence stretching into an eternity. Romeo can always sense when I’m not telling him something, and he doesn’t mind uncomfortable silences, which he knows I hate. “Willow,” I sigh. He grins triumphantly. “I’m going to knock that smile off your face,” I say to him. “Who’s Willow?” he asks. “Someone.” He stares at me. "Her brother overdosed on limbicus,” I continue. “And you feel responsible?” “I am responsible!” “You didn’t sell it to him,” he takes a swig of his beer. “And you didn’t force him to take it.” “Are you listening to yourself? I made that thing.” I recoil, disgusted with myself. “But you didn’t know...” I silence him with a glare. “Okay, fine,” he exhales. “Blame yourself if it makes you feel better. I was just trying to cheer you up.” “You are an asshole.” “I know,” he nods. “I can’t believe I’m a drug dealer.” “You are a drug dealer,” he laughs at his own joke like he always does. "I mean, you make prescription drugs." “You are an i***t,” I sigh, placing the glass of whiskey on the table. “You knew what limbicus is, then?” I ask. “Yeah, who doesn’t?” “Me, apparently, until a day ago.” “If you hung out with people instead of your chemistry set, you would know.” He grins. I roll my eyes at his Harry Potter joke. “I’m going to kill you.” “Just saying, man.” I’m glad that Romeo is trying to make me feel better, but I doubt that anything would make me feel better. What happened to Willow’s brother is my fault. “There’s something else bothering you,” he eyes me curiously. “I kissed her.” “Who?” he asks. “Willow.” “s**t!” his eyes widen. “I know. I messed up. She was supposed to be someone I was going to use to get back at my father, but I feel strangely overprotective of her.” “Do you think you could be in love with...” “No! She’s human, dude, and Liam’s mate. I’ve known her for like two seconds," I exhale. "I hope her loneliness doesn’t get her attached to me, and that she doesn’t get ideas about useless romantic notions about us.” “Right,” Romeo nods, unconvinced. “I care about her as a person, but I would never let her get that close to me.” “Okay,” he grins. “If she were my mate, you know I would’ve rejected her still. Having a human mate might be the most embarrassing thing. Worse, if she were my mate, Alpha Hunter would be proven right. That useless excuse of a man who calls himself my father.” Why am I even trying to convince Romeo that I have no feelings for Willow? “Oh! I almost forgot that Alpha Hunter believes that having a human mate means you are cursed by the Moon Goddess. But this is your life, Leo, and you are not a hundred percent part of his pack anymore.” He knits his eyebrows. “Something tells me you two hope to talk again. That’s why you didn’t break the connection between you and the pack,” he continues. I ask him questions about his pack and his job to avoid discussing Willow or my father. Romeo and I have been friends since we were teenagers. Romeo is from Gibbous Pack, and we met at training school. His father is a gamma, Romeo is a pretty good fighter and plans to be the next gamma in his pack. When we leave the club, Kit, my driver, takes me to one of my apartments that I turned into a lab. ‘You are in a good mood,’ I tease Asclepius, my wolf. ‘It was probably the kiss, you have to admit it was the best we ever...’ ‘The best I ever had. You don’t have to try to steal my moments, you know.’ ‘I wasn’t stealing anything,’ he protests. ‘I just wanted you to admit that it was the best. You know, sharing your moments is the least you could do, since you keep denying me my mates.’ ‘Where can I switch wolves?’ I retort. ‘That's rude,’ he growls playfully. ‘Anyway, I know what you thought when you saw her in your T-shirt.’ ‘I thought nothing.’ I close my eyes to get rid of the image, which turns out to be a bad idea. ‘Yeah, right,’ Asclepius comments. ‘Do we like her?’ ‘f**k! This is not good.’ I need to find out how to get rid of the memory of the kiss. ‘You like her, just admit it.’ ‘How are you cool with this? She’s not even our mate.’ ‘I gave up in that department,’ he taunts. ‘My mission right now is to ensure that at least you don’t become a bachelor for the rest of your life.’ ‘Well, to answer your question about liking her, we don’t like her. You know that. I just wanted to ensure that Liam didn’t reject her, but now I just feel guilty. As long as they are fated mates, she’s going to go back to him, and he doesn’t deserve her.’ Danger, one of Mike’s bouncers, arrives at the home lab, and hands me the bag of cash like he usually does. This time, it feels like an illegal transaction. I can’t believe I trusted Mike this much. “I need to talk to Mike,” I tell him. “I need to start making deliveries at his lab, I don’t mind.” "Let's go to the club," Danger says curtly. "He would probably love to hear your brilliant idea." Kit and I follow Danger's car on his way to the THC Club, Mike’s club. "He's in the office," Danger says, leading the way and leaving the bags of the experimental drugs in the car. My wolf becomes restless as I pass the door of the club. Willow? I take a whiff of the jasmine scent that invades my nostrils. ‘Is she our mate?’ I ask Asclepius.
