Chapter 4: Learning the Ropes

Sarah led me out of Mr. Blackthorne’s office to show me around. Even as we walked out I could still feel his gaze on my back. Sarah showed me everything from the restroom, to the break room, to the coffee maker, & to my cubicle which looked more like a small office since there were only 4 of us working up here. She never stopped talking during the whole time. She seemed really bubbly. She was someone I could see myself being friends with. She introduced me to the other three secretaries whose names were Jackie, Lynn, & Stacy. When we finally got to my cubicle she showed me how to use the computer & how I would answer the phone & who would most likely call during the day. She told me whenever line 1 blinked to answer it immediately no matter who I was on the phone with. Line 1 was Mr. Blackthorne’s line & he didn’t like to be kept waiting. I thanked her as she walked out & she asked if I would like to join her for lunch. I agreed and she said we could go to the cafe on the third floor. “They have the best croissantwiches.” She said. “Meet me there at noon.” “I’ll be there,” I promised.
