He gets two glasses out & puts ice in each one. He then opens a bottle of whiskey & pours some in each glass. I take a sip. It burns as it goes down. I’m not much of a whiskey drinker. I prefer my drinks sweet. “Are you okay?” he asks. “I’m fine,” I tell him. “I just don’t drink that much.” He swirls his glass as he looks down at it. I down the rest of mine even though it burns. He pours me some more. I down that glass. He looks up. Staring at me. I needed some liquid courage for what I’m about to do. “Mr. Blackthorne,” I begin. “Yes.” Is his only response. I’ve been getting messages from a secret admirer and they always sign it AB. The only person I know with those initials is you.” “So I was just wondering if that was you.” “I know there’s no way it’s possible.” “I’m just your secretary.” “All you do is play and walk away.” “But still I have to know.” He looks up. I’ve seen that look before-behind boardroom doors when he silences an entire room with a single command. “And if I am?” is his reply. I stop breathing. “Oh my god my secret admirer is my boss.” I almost can’t believe it. “Ashley, you didn’t answer my question.” My brain short circuits. “ I can’t believe it.” “I mean I wanted it to be, but I was too scared to hope.” He’s in front of me before I can blink. He grabs me & pulls me to him & kisses me til I can’t breathe. He finally breaks away but doesn’t let go. “Believe it.” He says. “I’ve wanted you since the day you walked into this office & I’m tired of hiding behind a screen.”
