CHAPTER 7: HEADLINE

1090 Words
Aria woke to the sound of her phone vibrating against the nightstand. For a moment she forgot where she was. The sheets were softer than anything she had ever owned. The ceiling above her was high and unfamiliar. The room smelled faintly of clean linen and something darker that lingered from the night before. Then it all came back. The contract. The marriage. Adrian. Her phone continued buzzing. Notifications stacked one after another. She reached for it. Her breath stilled. Vale’s New Bride: Opportunist or Mastermind? Another headline followed. Was the Marriage a Strategic Rescue or a Calculated Climb? Her fingers tightened around the phone. There were photos from last night’s announcement. A close-up of Adrian’s hand at her waist. A frame where she was looking up at him and he was staring down at her like she was something intensely private. The comments were worse. Gold digger. Smart move. She trapped him. He looks obsessed. Her chest felt tight. A knock sounded on her door before she could spiral further. “Come in,” she called. Evelyn stepped inside carefully, holding a tablet. Her expression said everything. “You’ve seen it.” Aria nodded. “The board is already reacting,” Evelyn continued. “Some investors are nervous. Selena arrived at the office early this morning.” Of course she did. Aria set her phone down slowly. “And Adrian?” “In his office. He’s been on calls since five.” That didn’t surprise her either. She swung her legs over the bed and stood. If they were going to dissect her character in public, she would not hide under silk sheets. By the time she stepped into the executive elevator later that morning, the building felt different. People stared. Not openly. Not rudely. But long enough. She walked with her shoulders straight, heels steady against the polished floor. If they expected her to crumble under headlines, they would be disappointed. When she entered the boardroom, the conversation stopped. Adrian sat at the head of the table, expression unreadable. Daniel was beside him. Selena sat across, posture sharp and composed, lips curved in something that was not quite a smile. “Good morning,” Aria said evenly. Selena’s gaze flicked over her. “I hope you’re enjoying the attention.” Aria pulled out a chair. “I prefer productivity over gossip.” A subtle shift passed through the room. Adrian’s eyes lifted briefly to meet hers. Something approving flashed there, quick and quiet. The meeting began. Concerns were raised. Market fluctuations were mentioned. The word instability was repeated more than once. Selena leaned forward slightly. “With respect, public perception matters. This sudden marriage has raised questions. Investors do not appreciate unpredictability.” Adrian remained calm. “The merger strengthens our position. The marriage changes nothing operationally.” “It changes optics,” Selena replied smoothly. Aria spoke before she could overthink it. “Then let’s change the optics.” The room turned toward her. “We schedule an exclusive interview. We address the merger transparently. We highlight the strategic alignment between both companies. We make this look intentional and structured rather than impulsive.” Silence followed. Daniel looked impressed. A few board members exchanged glances. Selena’s expression tightened slightly. Adrian leaned back in his chair, studying Aria like she had just stepped onto a battlefield he had not expected her to enter. “Continue,” he said. Aria did. She outlined a public relations strategy with calm clarity. She spoke about narrative control, investor reassurance, and long-term positioning. By the time she finished, the tension in the room had shifted. This was no longer about a bride. It was about a partner. After the meeting ended, the others filtered out slowly. Selena paused near Aria. “Careful,” she murmured softly. “This world devours women who think they can outsmart it.” Aria held her gaze. “Then I suppose it’s fortunate I don’t scare easily.” Selena’s smile vanished. When the door finally closed, only Adrian and Aria remained. He stood and walked toward her, slow and deliberate. “That was not in the contract,” he said. “What wasn’t?” “You stepping in.” She met his eyes. “Did I overstep?” “No.” The single word came firm. “You adapted,” he continued. “Most people panic under pressure.” “I grew up watching my father hold a company together with nothing but pride and stubbornness. Panic doesn’t fix anything.” Something in his expression softened. Not visibly to anyone else. But she saw it. “You were impressive,” he said quietly. The compliment felt heavier than it should have. She looked away first. Later that evening, the exclusive interview aired. Aria sat beside Adrian under studio lights. Cameras zoomed in. Questions sharpened. “Is this marriage a strategic alliance?” “Yes,” Adrian answered calmly. “And is there love involved?” The room held its breath. Aria felt his hand shift slightly against hers beneath the table. Warm. Steady. “Yes,” he said. Her heart skipped. He did not look at the interviewer when he said it. He looked at her. The clip spread across social media within minutes. That night, when they returned to the penthouse, the silence between them was different from before. Not cold. Charged. “You didn’t have to say that,” she said softly once they were alone. “I don’t say things I don’t intend.” Her pulse quickened. “You intend love?” He stepped closer. “I intend to protect what is mine.” The words should have unsettled her. Instead they ignited something dangerous and thrilling inside her. Before she could respond, his phone rang. He glanced at the screen. His expression changed instantly. “What is it?” she asked. He ended the call slowly. “There’s been a leak,” he said. “What kind of leak?” “Financial documents from Cole Enterprises.” Her stomach dropped. “That’s impossible.” “It’s deliberate.” A pause. “And whoever did it wants you blamed.” The air in the room shifted. This was no longer about headlines or interviews. This was war. Adrian’s gaze hardened. “Stay close to me,” he said quietly. For the first time since signing the contract, Aria understood something clearly. The marriage was not the most dangerous part of her new life. The enemies were. And someone had just made their first move.
