Chapter 3

Lucas turned away from Gyle, smiling, and started walking. He wasn't angry anymore but he had scared the noble with his sudden outburst of anger, but hadn't chickened out like Lucas was expecting him to. Lucas was to meet him at Mystique court, wherever that was. He then thought about Aurelia, she had been furious that he had insulted Gyle, even worse that he had accepted the duel. Lucas decided thinking about it wouldn't help, so he started to think about the duel. "I doubt he will fight me himself, he'll probably use magic." Lucas didn't like that idea, he had been in lots of fights in his life, he wasn't a stranger to combat, he knew how to fight hand to hand and with swords, but he had no idea how to fight a mage. Maybe I'll have to use it, if things get really bad he thought I really hope I don't have to though. He heard footsteps behind him, and then someone grabbed his arm. "Companion, where do you think you're going?" Aurelia asked him, she seemed to be less angry than a few minutes ago. "To fight the duel." He said simply, looking at her. "Well I forbid you from it! You will apologize to Gyle and cancel this duel!" She said sternly, but Lucas noticed something strange, she wasn't making eye contact with him. "No." he said flatly. "He insulted my parents, and I can never forgive him for that. I must win this duel so that he learns his place." Aurelia looked at him and opened her mouth to say something when she saw the look in his eyes. It was one of pain, and sadness. Her mouth closed, and she wondered for the first time just what kind of life did he have before I summoned him to be my familiar? It mustn't have been a happy one Louise thought to herself. Lucas turned away from her and started walking; he saw a servant walking past and stopped them. "Excuse me, but could you please tell me where Mystique Court is?" He asked. "It's over there sir." He said, pointing. "Thank you, and please don't call me sir, call me Lucas." Lucas smiled at the servant and walked in the direction he had indicated. He noticed a large crowd was gathering where the duel would take place I guess the whole school knows about it he smiled as he approached the crowd, the students turned to face him and parted so he could get into the middle of the circle. Gyle was already waiting for him; he looked like he had completely recovered from earlier, Lucas could tell just from looking at him that Gyle was confident he could beat Lucas. As Lucas emerged from the crowd an arrogant smile spread across Gyle face. "Well I'm surprised you came after all, I thought that maybe you would chicken out." Gyle taunted. Lucas smiled. "I could say the same to you." He replied. Gyle just laughed. "Let's see if you can still talk to me like that after our duel." Lucas assumed a fighting pose, right foot behind him; he made fists with both hands and held them up at chest height. "Oh I won't need to; your pride will be shattered so insulting you would be a waste of my time." Lucas smirked. Gyle laughed again. "Do you really believe you can defeat me? I guess I have to teach you a lesson about humility." He pulled out a rose, Lucas took a step back as he did, but didn't let his guard down Looks can be deceiving he said to himself. Gyle waved the rose and a single petal fell off. It landed and a suit of armor emerged from the ground where the petal had landed. It stood a little taller than Gyle and had a lance. "My name is Gyle the Bronze. I am an earth mage, so therefore your opponent will be the bronze golem, Valkyrie." He smirked. Figures, I guessed he wouldn't be fighting me himself Lucas examined the Valkyrie, looking for a weak point. Without warning the Valkyrie charged straight at Lucas, holding its lance out in front of itself. Lucas was nearly caught off guard but managed to dodge the spear, jumping left. Its fast, but it shouldn't be too difficult to dodge its attacks his left foot landed on the ground and he then jumped at the Valkyrie, swinging his left fist at its head. Its blow collided but didn't do much damage. Lucas jumped back as the Valkyrie swung its lance round, but the tip of it hit his hip, and he spun around and landed on his knee. Darn, that punch didn't do much He stood back up I'm guessing that thing must be hollow, if so I hope it can't just repair itself if I manage to break off its arm or destroy the helmet, the crowd was watching intently, Aurelia was anxious, her companion did seem to know how to fight, but she doubted he could actually defeat a Valkyrie. The Valkyrie again charged at Lucas, this time swinging the lance towards the right side of Lucas's head. This time Lucas was ready for the attack, and he managed to duck under the lance, as he prepared to counterattack he noticed the Valkyrie swinging its other arm towards him, he couldn't block in time and the Valkyries fist connected with his face, knocking him backwards. The Valkyrie grabbed the lance with both hands and swung it downwards towards Lucas who barely managed to get out the way; he got onto his feet and jumped backwards away from the Valkyrie. "Dammit, I should have noticed that sooner, at this rate that thing is going to beat me." The Valkyrie turned to face him, and charged again, this time holding its spear out in front again, suddenly Lucas got an idea. Time seemed to slow down for Lucas as the Valkyrie got closer, Lucas seemed to stumble to his right; the Valkyrie saw this and held the spear out further. It's now or never Lucas thought. As the spear was about to hit him, Lucas twisted his body to the right, turning his back to the Valkyrie, and out of the spears way. His left elbow was sticking out, and the spear passed in-between his arm and body, as the Valkyries elbow got level with his, Lucas trapped it under his arm, and using all his strength, twisted to the left and snapped the Valkyries arm off. As he was turning he put the rest of his strength into a punch, which he hurled straight into the Valkyries face. The force of the punch shattered the Valkyries head into pieces, and time sped up again for Lucas. He stumbled backwards a little before regaining his footing and looked at the Valkyrie he had defeated, it was crumbling into dust phew, and at least I only have to kill them once he let out a little smile before resuming a fighting pose. The whole crowd was shocked, even Gyle was surprised. However he overcame his surprise quickly and then shouted. "No matter, I have more where that came from! And this time they won't go easy on you!" He waved his rose and 6 more petals fell off, all forming Valkyries. Lucas quickly scanned them 6 on 1, "I've had worse odds stacked against me, but that's when I was fighting people, not Valkyries." he said in his mind. Aurelia was worried, she had been surprised when Lucas had defeated 1 Valkyrie, but there was no way he could beat 6 at once.
