"They took her. They took Hazel back to torture her some more because we weren't fast enough."
Mary sat in the command center, that blood-written note clenched in her fist. We'd been back from Nevada for six hours. Six hours of debriefing, treating injured wolves, and trying to process what The Covenant's retaliation meant.
"It's not your fault," I said for the tenth time.
"Yes it is. I should have anticipated they'd go after freed prisoners. Should have secured the safe houses better. Should have done something." She looked at me with devastated eyes. "Hazel testified for us. Helped us plan the Nevada raid. And now she's back in their hands because of me."
