Chapter 10

1084 Words
Finally, the moment I’ve both yearned for and fought against for so many years.... it’s finally here. And frankly I just don’t have the energy to push him away anymore. Robin leans forward, his hands gently cupping my face. If it weren’t for those steady fingers I’m sure I’d be a heap of goo on the floor right now. I’m literally melting at his touch. His lips pause for a second before reaching mine, as if he expects me to pull away at the last second like I always do. But I don’t. Not this time. I just can’t resist him anymore. He bends down, his long and slender frame towering over mine. Our breath is mingling in the sparkling green air between us. He releases a shuddering exhale, and I can tell that he’s just as nervous as I am. “Mariel,” he whispers, “I’ve loved you for so long.” “I love you too,” I answer with shaky breath. “As a friend... or more?” He asks. I feel like my throat has completely closed up. I can’t breathe. I can’t talk. “Please, Mariel,” he begs, “One kiss. If you feel nothing, we can completely forget it ever happened. I’ll let you go. We can just stay... friends.” The word sounds literally painful for him to say. Friends. It hurts me too. But it can’t hurt to try just once, can it? So I nod. With that concession, Robin’s emotions open up like floodgates. His lips crash into mine with a desperate adoration that causes a frantic energy to rip through my body. I wrap my arms around his neck and our lips part slightly, allowing our tongues to meet for the first time. The magic around us swells, swirling around faster as our heartbeats accelerate, everything synchronized in perfect harmony. His hand slides down my arm, eventually finding its way to my lower back. The caress sends a ripple of goosebumps across my skin. Just when I think the moment can’t get any more perfect, he pulls me close to his body. I feel his heart beating against my own chest. My fingers find their way to his shimmering ebony hair, clutching it desperately. It’s like I’m afraid he will disappear if I let go. Almost instinctively our feet make their way over to his bed, though our lips never part as we walk. His kisses, though tender and gentle, are becoming deeper and more passionate with every passing moment. We reach the edge of the bed, the backs of my legs pressed against it. I know that if we stop now, the spell will be broken and I’ll never have the courage to do this again. My hands slide down his neck, grasping his shirt frantically as his tongue finds its way deeper into my mouth. I can feel the muscles of his chest tensing under my touch. This is heaven. I’ve been in heaven, and it is nothing compared to this. Slowly he guides me down onto to the bed, his statuesque body poised over mine. He pulls away for a moment, and I know he’s stopping to check on me, to see if I want him to slow down. But I pull him back to my lips as quickly as I can. I can’t let him stop or I will chicken out. I know I will. So we deepen our kiss as his body presses into mine. I surrender to the tidal wave of sensations coursing through my body, trying to shut my mind off completely. An orb of glittering magic has formed around us like a snow globe. Our own little bubble of perfection. I’m ready to give in to him. Knock… knock… knock. Damnit. Our lips freeze when we hear the knock. I turn my head to the door, but Robin puts his finger h see my chin and brings my lips back toward his. “Ignore it,” he whispers before he leans down to kiss me again. Knock… knock… knock… “Sire!” Shouts a voice from the other side of the door, “Erwyn has been bitten! You must come quickly!” Robin stops kissing me and pulls away, a shadow of fear crossing his eyes. “Wait here,” he whispers as he turns to run toward the door. He cracks it open and one of the High Fairies is waiting on the other side, panic written all over his face. I sit up, watching them curiously. The Fairy and Robin exchange heated whispers, and I can tell that whatever’s just happened is bad. Really bad. After a few seconds, the high fairy leaves and Robin closes his door. He hangs his head as he walks back to me. He takes a seat on the bed beside me, still looking at the floor. “A fairy has been attacked nearby,” he sighs. Who would attack a fairy so close to their lands? “Werewolf or Vampire?” I ask. “I don’t know yet. I have go check on him,” he answers sadly. “I’ll come too,” I offer. “No,” Robin says firmly. “I want you to stay here. I couldn’t bear it if you changed your mind and ran away from me again.” He places a hand gently on my thigh. “Besides, we need this attack to stay quiet if your peace treaty is going to work. I’ll go check on Erwyn myself and see if he can be healed, but you will draw too much attention. Just wait here, I’ll see what I can find out and come straight back.” I stare deep into his green eyes, wishing we could just go back in time and freeze that perfect moment for a little longer. But now all I can do is hope that Robin will be back in my arms soon. “Okay,” I answer with a sigh. “Promise you’ll wait for me?” He asks. I smile weakly. “I promise.”
