Well… that’s definitely not what I was expecting him to say.
“And we are getting married… officially,” he continues, “Next week.”
“Wow…” I say in shock, “I guess I’ve been gone too long.”
My dad frowns and puts a finger under my chin, lifting my face toward his. “Mariel, are you okay?” He asks, “This isn’t the reaction I was expecting.”
“Sorry,” I sigh, “There’s just… so much going on. It’s a lot to process.”
He nods. “I know,” he says, “but your family will always be here for you. You don’t have to go it alone. You just have to stop shutting us out.”
I smile feebly at him. “I know,” I say, “Thanks, Dad.”
We continue our meal with a little small talk, but I’m lost in thought. My mind isn’t even present at the table.
