The Red Ruby Pendant

1112 Words
Selene’s POV “I want you to have this…” I took the ruby pendant from my neck and wore it on Morgan. She smiled sweetly at me and touched the pendant with her fingers. “It’s beautiful,” She was the only friend I had in the orphanage, Morgan was weak, and I had to be there to protect her as my best friend. Her golden eyes glimmer at the pendant. I have been at the orphanage for as long as I can remember, my memory has been hazy, and when I was brought in, the orphanage matron said I was wearing my pendant as a birthday gift. The pendant was the only precious thing I owned, but I wanted Morgan to have it, to show how much she means to me and I will always be by her side. And now, I am thirteen. “I don’t have anything to give you, Selene.” She pouted sadly. “You don’t have to give me anything, and…” I held her hand and quickly pulled her out of sight when I saw the orphanage director coming, he was strict with everyone in the orphanage, and it was advisable not to run into him. Behind him was a mysterious visitor, who was tall, in a black suit and a mask over his face. The only thing visible was his red eyes. I ducked into the wall, the second he stopped walking. “You have to do as I’ve said, that’s the only way we can sign a contract with you.” The man said and jammed his hands into his pockets. “What’s going on…” “Ssh.” I placed a finger over Morgan’s mouth. “Don’t say a word,” I whispered and she nodded at me. “We are not having this conversation here.” The director took a two-step back and glanced around the corner. “And I will not sell those girls to you.” Morgan and I exchanged glances. Sell? What does he mean, sell? “You don’t have much of a choice, Carson, that’s what you do, and why you run this orphanage.” The director gritted out. “You might have to increase your price,” “You’re not the only one who wants them, I can easily auction them off to those wealthy families that need a plaything, and I will get a good pay, but I’m being generous with you. Those girls are already of age.” My hands trembled on my skirt, and tears started to burn my eyes, fear had surrounded me. “Do you think I fed and clothed those girls to sell them off that cheaply? I need to get my money's worth.” He pretended that this was an orphanage home for orphaned children but it wasn’t. He was grooming us to be sold. The mysterious man sighed. “The Alpha wants one, and that’s the reason I’m here and you’re going to give me one.” “Not for a cheap amount.” “50 million dollars.” The director chuckled, shaking his head as he started to walk out without replying to the mysterious man who still had a mask on his face. Morgan reached out to my hand and held it, I saw the fear in her almond-shaped eyes. I took my lips in and forced a smile on my lips. I wanted to assure her that everything was going to be okay, because I was acting like the big protective sister, even though we were at the same age. The director had walked ahead with the mysterious visitor who had a dark aura around him. We came out of the dark corner and were instantly caught by the matron. She was chubby, and short, around 5 '1 with a stone face and short brown hair. “What are you doing here?!” She barked, I jelted in fright. “I warned you never to come this way, didn’t I? You are just so stubborn, after breakfast, you were warned to go back to your rooms, why are you still out by this time?” She pulled me by the ear, and I groaned pleading for her to let go. “Go back to your dorms!” She shouted and pushed me forward. “I’m sorry, Matron ma.” Morgan pleaded with tears streaming down her face, and her hands clasped together. “It would never happen again, please.” She gave her a pitiable look before she got hit by the matron, she stopped halfway and jabbed me by the back instead. It worked every time for Morgan, she was so fragile, so small, so weak. “Don’t ever come out until you hear the bell!” The door was slammed the second we got into the room, I stared at Morgan and caught her gaze. It was just us in the room, the other girls had been moved elsewhere, matron said they would get adopted, but what if they were sold? There was never any adoption for those girls and we were next. “If we don’t leave, we are going to get sold.” “You heard what he said Morgan,” “What are we going to do?” Morgan asked with a shaky voice. The director will keep selling us as slaves to Alphas and powerful werewolves as long as they are wealthy enough. “We can’t leave.” Morgan dropped her hands from my pendant. “The matron is outside and watching us, if we get caught, we will never make it out alive.” I held Morgan’s hand. “Are you not scared of what will happen?” “Morgan, I don’t want to lose you to some beast.” Morgan’s gaze fell on my hand. “You won’t lose me.” “Let’s leave.” “Your ear is hurt.” She mentioned it, and I shrugged it off because it didn’t matter, we needed to run away from the orphanage. That was what was important, this wasn’t the first time I got hurt. “Those girls in the room got sold, and that’s the same thing that will happen to us.” We need to run for our lives. “Come with me, Morgan,” I squeezed her hand in mine. I didn’t want to leave her behind. “Let’s leave the orphanage.” She nodded at me. “I agree.” It was settled, we were leaving the orphanage tonight during the time for dinner, by morning it would be difficult to get out, and the matron would notice that we were both missing.
