Chapter 6

636 Words
A message from Victor suddenly popped up on her phone: Victor: Julia, you still dare to run? Get back home immediately, kneel down, and apologize to Chloe. Maybe then I'll forgive you. Julia didn’t reply. She pulled out the SIM card, snapped it in half, and threw it away. The team from the Global Medical Alliance drove her to the airport. Just before boarding, she was about to turn off her phone when she saw the top trending topic: #HayesGroupCEOAdoptedDaughterTakenByPolice# Victor’s messages to Julia remained unanswered. He frowned and tried to place a voice call. A second later, a glaring red exclamation mark appeared on the screen. Victor nearly laughed in pure frustration. He hadn't expected Julia to make such a scene over something so trivial. Wasn't it just because he hadn't saved her and Ethan first, and had instead sent Chloe back to school? He had been far too indulgent with Julia over the years, which was why she felt emboldened to repeatedly act out in jealousy and slander Chloe. But the moment he recalled Julia’s bloodshot eyes, filled with raw rage and hatred, Victor felt an inexplicable pang in his chest. It was a dull ache that left him restless. "It hurts, Uncle Victor. Come make it better..." Chloe pouted from her hospital bed. For the first time, Victor felt annoyed by her act. A high schooler was crying like a helpless toddler. Even six-year-old Ethan was more mature than this. Thinking of his son, he realized it had been five days. Julia's recent episodes worried him; he had to find her and Ethan. "Take a pill. I'm not a doctor. Blowing on it won't help." Chloe froze, her eyes welling up instantly. "Uncle Victor, you..." He ignored her and sped off in his car. Back home, the living room was still a mess. Bloody ropes hung from the ceiling. Martha was scrubbing the floor. Victor stopped her. The large bloodstains on the white tile stung his eyes. Five whips lay nearby, stained with dried flesh and blood. He could only imagine how brutally Julia had been beaten. "Who whipped my wife yesterday?" He turned around, his expression unreadable. Five guards stepped forward. Victor clapped with a cold smirk. "All at once?" One guard nodded, trying to suck up to him. "Thanks to your wisdom and decisiveness in letting us act, sir. Otherwise, Madam would have kept acting crazy. Don’t worry, Mr. Hayes, we all went hard on her—we made sure to 'fix' her..." A ruthless glint instantly filled Victor’s eyes. He suddenly stood up and kicked the guard to the ground. "Who allowed you to be so vicious?" It was as if they had touched his ultimate nerve; the man in the suit was no longer composed. Instead, he lashed out like a madman, punching and kicking the guards. "Julia is my wife. No matter what she did wrong, do you think it’s your place to discipline her for me? There was so much blood on the floor. If she hadn’t escaped on her own, were you going to beat her to death?" The guards immediately fell silent, too terrified to make a sound. They watched as Mr. Hayes beat the guard until his face was bruised and swollen, leaving him wailing in pain. "Mr. Hayes, I was wrong! I swear I won’t dare do it again!" Victor grew tired from the exertion. He loosened his shirt buttons and leaned against the sofa, breathing heavily. His phone rang at that moment. He didn't want to answer, but after he hung up, his assistant kept calling persistently. Victor grew increasingly annoyed and finally picked up. The assistant’s anxious voice came through the receiver, "Mr. Hayes! Please go to the Police Department right away! Miss Chloe was just taken away by the police!"
