Laurel could not sleep properly last night. When she finally drift off, she had a nightmare. She feels as if something dangerous was running after her and is nearly catching up to her. She has a feeling that the thing will ultimately consume her and then she will be lost forever. When she woke up, sunlight was streaming from the window, she blinked rapidly and yawn. She got up to take a quick shower and got dress for the day. Since Nat will be coming to the office she wanted to appear elegant as well as confident, so she choose her dress carefully. She had not seen her old friend for such a long time, she wondered what he would be like. The last time they saw each other she was not exactly herself, so she hardly said a proper goodbye to him. She hoped that Nat will not have any hard feeling towards her due to her coldness at that time. The reason for her attitude was that she had believed that he was on Jason's side at that time. She had no idea on what to believe up till now. However there is one thing she is very sure of. She was not good enough for Jason at that time and she will always remember that. She choose her dress with care, apply minimum make up and leave her hair down, cascading in a curly glory down her shoulder. She went to her kids room and they had breakfast together shortly. After bidding them to have a good time she slowly drove out into the traffic. Her mind went back to the last day with her father. She knew that her father was laid off from work because of her but she doesn't know about the humiliation he had suffered from Jason's mother. On that fateful day she had asked her father permission to see Jason and his father had turned away from her. "Dad, let me just see hom for a bit, i want to talk to him," she had begged. Although she was not certain she already suspected that she was pregnant by that time. Her dad looked at her with compassion and hug her. "I'm sorry, sweetheart. I can't let you go there. You see, his mother had ....." his father shook his head and abruptly let go of her. "You don't understand. His mother will tear you to pieces if she laid her eyes on you. She had warned me that since we are so beneath them she doesn't want to dirty her hands but will happily leave the job to professionals," he rasp. Laurel had never seen her father like that. Since her mother passed away shortly after her birth he had done everything to make her life complete. He never raised his voice at her, spending all his free time with her and always interested in things that her daughter was interested. His father gently kissed her head and looked at her with affection and pride. If only he had known what she suspected she thought. "Baby i know you are hurting right now, but you have to forget him. He's not meant for you. I know that one day you will meet someone who will love you as much as i love you mum," he whispered softly. "When the time comes, you will never be in doubt as to your feeling towards each other. I want you to wait patiently for that man." Laurel gazed at her father with her big blue eyes and imagined the love he had for her mother. She laced her arm through her father's and walk alongside him to his car. She kissed her father on his cheek and smiled. "Don't worry, dad. I promise you that i will not try to see Jason unless you give me an ok," she whispered. That was the last thing she said to her father and she sure had kept her promise. Now, things are developing beyond her control and maybe it was time to take a step forward, she grimaced. Steven was pacing up and down, deep in thought. Maybe he should tell Laurel that he is unwilling to renovate the Whiton's office. He knew that it means a big pay cheque but he does not want to make Laurel uncomfortable or hurt her because of it. Money will come and go, but one should not make it rule their life, he thought. He knew that no matter how much she denied or try to hide her feelings Laurel is sure to get hurt one way or another. He doesn't want to put her in that spot where he can't protect her. What if the fact about her children leaked out to someone, what will he do then. There are too many risk involve with the job so it is better not to accept it. His decision made, he finally sat down and pour himself a cup of coffee. He let out a long sigh when he heard Laurel's car. Laurel entered the office and smile sheepishly at Steven. "Sorry, today breakfast took longer than usual," she mouthed. She removed her coat and sat down slowly. Steven handed her a cup of coffee and gave her a wink. "I would love to spend sometime with the little devils," he gushed. "When are you going to invite me for dinner again." Laurel smile sweetly. " You know that you are always welcome there. I just don't want to intrude, that's why i haven't invited you these days." Steven arched his brows. "Really. And here i was, thinking that you are tired of my company," he shot back quickly. "You know the kids really enjoyed your company everytime. We can have dinner tonight if you are free." "Let's keep that in cold storage for now. Let's see how the day develope before making any plans, shall we." Laurel shrug. She understood what Steven was implying. She took a deep breath and gave him a bright smile. She is ready to face anything she thought. She was sure that Nat will not be that different from the olden days and she is actually looking forward to seeing him again. Steven pat her affectionately. "Don't worry. I will be by your side all the time," he said. "Or we can just decline the offer like we decided. It is not too late ti back out, you know." "No. Its alright. You don't have to worry about me. I am a grown woman," she chuckled. Steven gave her a thumbs up and whistled. "What about the kids. Do you want to keep them out." Laurel blinked rapidly, her blue eyes turned dark. "I would appreciate it if you keep them out of it. I don't want anything to happen to them. Their life is already complicated as it is," she said gruffly. At that moment they both heard the sound of a car door slamming infront of their office. Steven got up and look out the window, when he saw two men walking towards the office he turn to look at Laurel and watch her face drained off all colours. Laurel looked at Steven with panic. What was he doing here. She has prepared herself to meet Nat after a long time, she had no idea that Jason will be coming as well. What a freaking surprise this was. She glance at Steven. Did he know that Jason will be coming as well. Steven mentally shake his head. He wondered who the other person was. Nat did not mention anything about coming with a colleague. Any way it does not matter now, he will soon find out.
