CHAPTER 2: THE MAN BEHIND THE NAME

1359 Words
Ava didn’t sleep. Not even for a minute. She sat on her bed, staring at the black envelope on her table like it might explode at any moment. The same question kept repeating in her mind. Who sent it? Because she was sure of one thing now. It wasn’t random. Nothing about last night had been random. Not the email. Not the message. Not the timing. Especially not the words. Welcome back, Ava. We’ve missed you. Her phone lay beside her, silent. Too silent. As if waiting. As if watching. By morning, Ava had made a decision. She would go. Not because she trusted Knight Global. Not because she trusted Adrian Knight. But because she had no other choice. Seventy-two hours. Her mother’s life was still on a countdown. Knight Global Headquarters felt even larger in daylight. More intimidating. More unreal. Ava stood outside the glass building, gripping her handbag tightly. You can do this. She repeated it in her head. Over and over. Like a shield. Like a lie. Inside, everything was the same as yesterday. Perfect. Silent. Controlled. But this time, something felt different. People looked at her. Not casually. Not normally. Like they recognized her. Ava noticed. And it unsettled her. “Miss Bennett.” The receptionist from yesterday stood immediately. Waiting. Like she had been expecting her. Ava forced calm. “Yes.” “You may proceed. Mr. Knight is already expecting you.” That word again. Expecting. Her stomach tightened. She followed the receptionist through the private elevator once more. Up. Higher. Far away from everyone else. The doors opened to silence again. But this time… The silence felt heavier. Like something had already happened here. Something she wasn’t part of. Yet. The double doors opened without her knocking. Ava stepped inside. And froze. He was there. Adrian Knight. But this time, he wasn’t standing by the window. He was sitting at a long black table. Surrounded by documents. Screens. Files. Like a man already deep inside a war no one else could see. He didn’t look up immediately. He didn’t need to. “You came,” he said calmly. Ava stepped in slowly. “I had no choice.” That made him pause. Finally, he looked at her. And Ava felt it immediately. That presence. Cold. Heavy. Intense. Like standing too close to a storm. “You always have a choice,” he said. Ava almost laughed. “Not when your mother is dying.” A flicker. Something passed through his eyes. So fast she almost missed it. But it was there. Recognition. Maybe even understanding. He stood. Slowly. Deliberately. Every movement controlled. “You read the contract?” he asked. “Yes.” “And?” Ava crossed her arms. “It’s insane.” A faint silence. Then— “That depends on your perspective.” Ava frowned. “What does that mean?” Adrian walked toward her. Not fast. Not slow. Just certain. Controlled. Every step made the room feel smaller. “I don’t make offers lightly,” he said. “Then why me?” That question again. The one she couldn’t ignore. Adrian stopped in front of her. Close enough that Ava could feel the weight of his presence. Too close. Yet he didn’t step back. Instead, he studied her. Like he was remembering something. Or comparing her to something she didn’t understand. “You remind me of someone,” he said finally. Ava frowned. “Who?” He didn’t answer. Not immediately. And when he did, it wasn’t a full answer. “It doesn’t matter.” That wasn’t true. Ava knew it instantly. Before she could press further, the doors opened again. A man entered. Tall. Sharp suit. Cold expression. He placed a file on the table. “Sir, the board is waiting.” Adrian didn’t look away from Ava. “Reschedule.” The man hesitated. “Sir—” “I said reschedule.” The assistant left quickly. Silence returned. Thicker now. Heavier. More personal. Ava broke it first. “If I sign this contract… what exactly am I becoming?” Adrian tilted his head slightly. “You become my wife.” The words hit differently this time. Not shocking. Not surprising. But real. Ava shook her head. “No. That’s not what I mean.” Adrian studied her. Waiting. Patient. Annoyingly calm. Ava stepped closer. “If I agree… what am I really walking into?” That question lingered between them. For the first time, Adrian didn’t respond immediately. When he finally did, his voice lowered. “You’re walking into my world.” Ava didn’t like that answer. Not at all. “What kind of world is that?” A pause. A dangerous one. “One you can’t walk out of easily.” Ava felt a chill crawl through her spine. “What does that mean?” Adrian’s gaze sharpened slightly. “It means people will watch you.” Ava frowned. “Who?” “People you’ve never met.” “That doesn’t make sense.” “It will.” Silence. Again. Then Ava looked down at the contract still sitting on the table. “This feels like a trap.” Adrian didn’t deny it. That made her stomach drop. Instead, he said something worse. “It is.” Ava looked up immediately. “What?” “It’s a necessary one.” Her heart began to race. “That’s not an explanation.” “It’s the only one you’ll get.” Ava took a step back. “I don’t even know you.” A flicker. Something in his expression changed again. For a second. Then it was gone. “You know enough,” he said. “That’s not true.” “It is for now.” Ava felt anger rising. “What if I say no?” The room went still. Even Adrian stopped moving. For a moment, the entire building felt like it was holding its breath. Then he answered. “Then you walk away.” A pause. “And your mother’s treatment stops.” The words hit like a blade. Ava’s fists clenched. “You’re using her.” “No.” He said it instantly. Too fast. Too controlled. “I’m saving her.” Ava laughed bitterly. “That sounds the same to me.” Adrian stepped closer again. “This isn’t charity, Miss Bennett.” Ava met his gaze. “Then what is it?” Silence stretched. Long. Uncomfortable. Then— “It’s protection.” That word didn’t make sense. Not here. Not in this situation. “Protection from what?” Ava asked. Adrian didn’t answer. Instead, he picked up the contract. And placed a pen on top of it. “One year,” he said. “One signature.” “One decision.” He looked at her. And for the first time… His voice softened slightly. “And everything changes.” Ava stared at the pen. At the contract. At the man in front of her. Her entire life sat on that table. Her mother’s survival. Her future. Her freedom. Everything. And yet… Something about this felt wrong. Not the contract. Not the money. Something deeper. Something unspoken. Ava reached for the pen. Stopped. Looked at Adrian. “One condition,” she said. He raised a brow slightly. “Go on.” Ava’s voice was steady. “I want honesty.” A beat. Then— Adrian nodded once. “Agreed.” Ava exhaled slowly. Her hand tightened around the pen. And just as the tip touched the paper… The office lights flickered. Once. Twice. Then went completely dark. Silence swallowed everything. Ava froze. “What just happened?” she whispered. No answer. Then— A sound. A soft beep from Adrian’s desk. Followed by a voice through the emergency system. Cold. Unfamiliar. And terrifyingly calm. “Subject confirmed.” A pause. Then the final words: “Begin retrieval protocol.” Ava turned sharply. “Adrian… what is that?” But when she looked at him… For the first time since she met him… Adrian Knight looked alarmed. And that was when Ava realized— Signing the contract might have already been too late.
