The emergency lights blinked red.
Once.
Twice.
Then steadied into a dim glow that painted the office in shadows.
Ava’s heart was racing so fast she could hear it in her ears.
“Subject confirmed.”
The voice from the system echoed again before going silent.
Then nothing.
No explanation.
No follow-up.
Just silence.
Ava turned toward Adrian.
“What does that mean?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he moved.
Fast.
Controlled.
Too controlled.
He crossed the room and locked the main office door with a single swipe of his access card.
The click of the lock sounded too final.
Like something had just shut in… or shut out.
Ava stepped back slightly.
“What’s going on?”
Adrian didn’t look at her.
His eyes were fixed on the security panel by the wall.
Fingers typing rapidly.
His jaw was tight.
For the first time since she met him…
He didn’t look calm.
He looked alert.
Ava had never seen him like that.
It unsettled her more than the darkness.
“Adrian,” she said again, slower. “Tell me what’s happening.”
A pause.
Then he finally spoke.
“Stay behind me.”
That was not an answer.
It was a warning.
Ava’s chest tightened.
“I don’t understand.”
“You don’t need to.”
That made her anger flare.
“I think I do.”
Adrian glanced at her briefly.
Just once.
And something in his expression stopped her.
Not coldness.
Not arrogance.
Concern.
Real concern.
Before she could push further, the lights flickered again.
This time stronger.
The monitors on the wall blinked.
Then one by one…
They turned on.
Security footage.
Every camera in the building.
Every floor.
Every corridor.
Ava stared at the screens.
“Why are all these turning on by themselves?”
Adrian didn’t answer.
Because he was already watching something else.
The main screen in the center.
A live feed.
Of the building’s lower entrance.
And someone had just arrived.
Ava leaned forward slightly.
“What is that?”
Three black vehicles had stopped outside Knight Global.
Men in suits stepped out.
But they weren’t normal employees.
Ava could tell instantly.
Too synchronized.
Too quiet.
Too deliberate.
One of them looked up directly at the camera.
And smiled.
Ava felt a chill.
“Who are they?”
Adrian’s voice dropped lower.
“Not people we want inside this building.”
That wasn’t comforting.
Ava turned sharply.
“Then why are they here?”
Adrian finally looked at her.
And this time…
There was no hiding anything.
“Because of you.”
The words hit her like ice.
Ava blinked.
“What?”
But Adrian was already moving again.
He grabbed a secure tablet from his desk and activated something.
The windows automatically darkened.
Steel shutters began lowering over the glass walls.
Ava stepped back.
“Why are you locking the building?”
“Containment protocol.”
Ava’s voice rose slightly.
“Containment of what?”
Adrian finally faced her fully.
And said the one sentence she didn’t expect.
“Of you.”
The room went silent.
Ava’s breath caught.
“…What?”
Adrian didn’t move.
Didn’t soften.
Didn’t hesitate.
“It’s a precaution.”
Ava’s voice shook slightly.
“Against me?”
“No.”
“Then what?”
A pause.
Then—
“Against what they think you are.”
That made no sense.
None of it made sense.
Ava shook her head.
“I didn’t do anything.”
“I know.”
“Then why are they here?”
Adrian looked toward the screen again.
The men outside were now moving.
Too organized.
Too confident.
One of them held up a device.
The building’s security alarm flickered.
Adrian cursed under his breath.
For the first time.
Ava noticed.
He pressed a button on the desk.
“Lockdown level two.”
A voice responded instantly through the system.
“Confirmed.”
Ava stepped closer.
“This is insane.”
Adrian didn’t look at her.
“They found you faster than I expected.”
“Who are they?”
He finally answered.
But not clearly.
“People who erase things.”
Ava felt a cold twist in her stomach.
“Erase… people?”
Adrian met her eyes.
And for the first time…
He looked serious enough to frighten her.
“Yes.”
A loud metallic sound echoed from somewhere deep in the building.
Ava flinched.
“What was that?”
Adrian didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, he walked toward her.
Slow.
Controlled again.
But different now.
Urgent.
When he reached her, he stopped close enough that she could hear his voice clearly.
“Listen to me carefully.”
Ava nodded slightly.
Her throat was dry.
“You are going to do exactly what I say.”
“That depends on what you say.”
His eyes narrowed slightly.
A flicker of something.
Then—
“You asked for honesty earlier.”
Ava didn’t answer.
“You’re getting it now.”
Silence.
Heavy.
Then Adrian spoke again.
“You are not safe outside this building.”
Ava swallowed.
“Because of them?”
“Because of what you represent.”
A chill spread through her chest.
“I don’t represent anything.”
“You do.”
His voice dropped slightly.
“And that’s the problem.”
Before Ava could respond, the security system beeped loudly.
A red warning flashed on the screen.
BREACH DETECTED – LEVEL 1
Ava’s breath hitched.
“They’re inside?”
Adrian turned sharply toward the monitor.
“Yes.”
Ava stepped back.
Panic rising now.
“This is not normal interview behavior!”
Adrian ignored her.
He was already moving toward a hidden drawer.
Pulling out something she couldn’t see clearly.
A black device.
Small.
Heavy.
He placed it in her hand.
Ava stared at it.
“What is this?”
“A tracker.”
Her eyes widened.
“Why are you giving me a tracker?”
He met her gaze.
“Because if I lose you, they win.”
That sentence hit differently.
Ava’s fear shifted slightly.
Not gone.
But redirected.
“Adrian…”
But he was already walking toward the door.
“Stay behind me.”
Again.
That phrase.
A command.
Not a request.
The door unlocked.
Slowly opened.
And the moment it did—
A loud crash echoed from the hallway.
Ava’s heart jumped.
Footsteps.
Multiple.
Getting closer.
Adrian stepped forward slightly, blocking her view.
“Whatever happens,” he said quietly, “do not run on your own.”
Ava frowned.
“What do you mean don’t run?”
But he didn’t answer.
Because the door opened fully.
And the first intruder stepped inside.
Tall.
Dressed in black.
Face unreadable.
He looked at Ava immediately.
Not Adrian.
Not the building.
Her.
And smiled.
“That’s her,” he said calmly.
Adrian’s entire posture changed instantly.
Dangerous now.
Cold.
Controlled.
Like a switch had been flipped.
“You’re trespassing,” Adrian said.
The man tilted his head slightly.
“No.”
A pause.
“We’re retrieving property.”
Ava’s stomach dropped.
“Property?” she whispered.
The man took a step forward.
“You’ve been hidden long enough, Subject Zero.”
Silence.
Everything stopped.
Ava’s body went cold.
“…Subject Zero?”
The man nodded.
“Yes.”
Then he looked directly at her.
“And it’s time to take you home.”
Ava stepped back instinctively.
“No… I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Adrian moved immediately.
Blocking her fully now.
“You won’t touch her.”
The intruder laughed softly.
“Still protective, I see.”
Adrian’s voice dropped.
“This ends here.”
But the man only raised his hand.
And the others behind him stepped forward.
All at once.
Adrian didn’t look away from them.
But his next words were for Ava alone.
“Whatever happens next,” he said quietly, “do not trust anyone who mentions Subject Zero.”
Ava froze.
“What are you talking about?”
But Adrian didn’t answer.
Because the first attack began.
The lights exploded.
The alarms screamed.
And the room disappeared into chaos.
And in the middle of it all…
Ava realized one terrifying truth.
She was not in a job interview.
She was in the center of a war she never knew existed.
And she was the target.
