Chapter 10: Forbidden Attraction

1669 Words
The sun had dipped below the horizon, casting the forest in shades of twilight. Emma sat on the edge of her bed, staring out the window at the shadowed tree line, her mind a whirl of conflicted thoughts. She hadn’t been able to stop thinking about him all evening—Liam, with his piercing eyes and the unspoken distance that now stretched between them. The clinic encounter played on repeat in her head, his touch, his words, the way he had pulled back when they had been so close to something more. He’d tried to put up a wall between them, she could sense it. And yet, something inside her refused to accept it. Liam had opened the door to something more when he shared his truth, and now it was impossible to close it.Her gaze drifted to the tree line, the place where she had caught glimpses of him these past few nights. Against her better judgment, she found herself rising from the bed, slipping into a jacket, and stepping out into the cool evening air. Emma reached the edge of the trees, her heart pounding in her chest. She scanned the darkness, her pulse quickening with anticipation and fear. She knew Liam was close, even if she couldn’t see him. It was as if the forest itself was holding its breath, waiting for what might happen next. “Liam?” Her voice was barely a whisper, carried on the breeze that rustled the leaves. She stood there, vulnerable and uncertain, hoping he would emerge from the shadows. Hoping, despite everything, that he felt the same pull she did. The moments stretched on in silence, and for a moment, Emma feared she had made a mistake. Maybe he wasn’t there. Maybe she had misread everything. But then, from the darkness, she saw the flicker of movement. A familiar shape, stepping out from the trees, his presence as commanding as ever. Liam’s eyes, glowing faintly in the dim light, locked onto hers. He didn’t speak, but the air between them crackled with tension, the kind that left her breathless. Forbidden, dangerous, but impossible to ignore. “You shouldn’t be here,” Liam said, his voice hushed, breaking the silence. He took a step toward her, his expression conflicted. “It’s not safe.” “I don’t care,” Emma replied, her voice barely a whisper. She could feel the pull between them, the unspoken connection that had been simmering since the moment they met. “I had to see you.” Liam’s jaw tightened, and for a moment, it looked like he might turn and leave. But then he approached her in a few quick strides, his eyes dark and intense as he stopped just inches from her. She could feel the warmth radiating from his body, the tension rolling off him in waves. “This can’t be what you want, Emma,” he said, his voice low and gravelly. “You don’t know what you’re getting into.” “I think I do,” she whispered, her heart pounding. Her eyes flickered to his lips, her body aching to press against him. “And I think you do too.” He breathed in deeply, and for a moment, Emma saw the vulnerability in his eyes, the conflict waging war inside him. Then, without warning, he grabbed her by the waist and pulled her against him, his lips crashing down onto hers in a fierce, passionate kiss that took her breath away. There was no hesitation this time. No holding back. His hands gripped her as if he couldn’t bear to let go, and Emma responded in kind, tangling her fingers in his hair, pulling him closer. The world around them seemed to disappear as their bodies pressed together, the kiss deepening with each passing second. It was raw, intense, and filled with desire and longing. She melted into him, her senses overwhelmed by the feel of his lips on hers, the way his hands roamed over her back, pulling her closer. Pulling her body towards his. There was nothing gentle about this kiss—it was full of desperation, longing, and a need they could no longer deny. His hands slid down to her hips, pulling her even tighter against him as his lips moved from her mouth to her jaw, trailing heated kisses down her neck. Emma didn't dare breathe, her entire body trembling under his touch. She could feel the restraint in him, the tension in his muscles as he fought to control himself. But just as quickly as the moment had escalated, it shattered. Liam suddenly pulled away, leaving her breathless and dazed, her heart pounding in her chest. His hands were still on her hips, his eyes locked on hers, but the distance between them felt like a chasm. “Liam?” she breathed, confusion clouding her mind. She took a hesitant step toward him, her fingers still tingling from where they had touched his skin. “Why did you—” “Emma, I can’t.” His voice was strained, full of conflict, his eyes not meeting hers. He turned slightly, running a hand through his hair in frustration. She could see the tension in his shoulders, the battle he was fighting within himself. “I shouldn’t have let it go this far.” Her heart twisted at his words, but she refused to let the distance grow. “What do you mean? We’re finally being honest with each other—don’t pull away now. Talk to me, Liam.” He sighed, the sound heavy with the weight of his internal struggle. “I’ve been trying to protect you. Not just from the shadows, but from... me. From what I am.” Emma frowned, stepping closer despite the invisible barrier he was putting up. “I don’t understand. You said you’re the guardian of the forest. You protect people. That’s who you are, right?” Liam’s jaw clenched, and he turned his back to her, staring out into the dark woods. The silence between them was thick, the tension almost unbearable. “I am,” he said quietly, his voice low and controlled. “But it’s more complicated than that, Emma. You don’t know what it’s like... to have this thing inside of me. The wolf. Always pushing, always clawing to get out, especially when I’m around you.” Her breath caught in her throat, and her mind spun. “Around me? What does that mean?” Liam finally turned to face her, his eyes glowing faintly in the darkness, the wolf inside him barely held at bay. “The wolf is drawn to you. It wants you, and it’s getting harder to control the closer I get to you.” His voice cracked slightly, revealing just how much he was struggling. “When I kissed you just now, it took everything I had not to lose control.” Emma’s heart raced at his admission, a mix of fear and something else—something deeper, more primal. “Liam, you’re not going to hurt me. You’re stronger than that.” “You don’t understand,” he growled, taking another step back. “Every time we’re near each other, the pull gets stronger. I want you more than I’ve wanted anything in my life, but that’s dangerous. For both of us.” Emma reached for him, her hand brushing his arm, and she felt the tremor that ran through him. “Liam, I trust you. I’m not afraid.” He closed his eyes, his face contorted with frustration. “But I am,” he admitted quietly. “If I lose control—if the wolf takes over—I could hurt you, Emma. And I couldn’t live with myself if that happened.” Emma stared at him, her heart aching at the depth of his internal battle. She wanted to say something, anything, to ease his pain, but the weight of his words hung heavy between them. “So, what happens now?” she asked softly. “I have a duty, to the pack,” Liam said, his tone steadying as he looked away from her, focusing on the distance. “I’m their alpha. My focus needs to be on protecting them, not... this.” He gestured between the two of them. “They’re already worried that I’m being pulled away from what matters. They see you as a distraction.” Emma’s throat tightened. “I’m not trying to distract you, Liam. I just—” “I know.” His voice softened, and he met her gaze with an intensity that made her heart skip a beat. “But it’s not that simple. You’re human, Emma. And I... I’m not. I’m caught between two worlds, and right now, everything is coming apart. The shadows are getting bolder, the pack needs me, and...” He trailed off, struggling to find the right words. “I don’t know if I can keep balancing it all.” Emma stepped closer again, undeterred by the space he tried to keep between them. “But what about us? What about what we feel?” Liam let out a deep breath, his expression pained. “What I feel for you... it’s real. But I can’t let myself act on it. Not when it puts everything else at risk. Not when I can barely control the wolf inside me. I need time, Emma. I need to figure out how to keep this balance without losing everything.” The ache in her chest deepened, but she nodded slowly, understanding the gravity of what he was saying, even though it hurt. “Okay,” she whispered, her voice shaky. “But promise me something.” Liam looked at her, his eyes softening. “Promise me you won’t push me away completely,” she said. “Don’t shut me out.” Liam hesitated, then slowly nodded. “I’ll try,” he said quietly, his voice barely audible above the whisper of the wind.
