Chapter 3: Shadows and Secrets

2043 Words
The days following Liam’s visit were a blur of routine, tension, and lingering questions. Emma threw herself into her work at the clinic, tending to the town’s animals and attempting to hold onto some semblance of normalcy. It was a quiet afternoon, the clinic empty between appointments, when Emma found herself sitting at her desk, staring blankly at the stack of patient files in front of her. Her thoughts kept drifting back to Liam and the creature from the woods. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t shake the memory of his magnetic, intense gaze or the way he had fought off the beast with supernatural ease. A soft knock at the door pulled Emma from her thoughts. She glanced up just as the door creaked open, revealing a woman standing in the entryway, her face drawn and weary. Emma quickly rose to her feet, her professional instincts kicking in. “Hi, can I help you?” Emma asked, smoothing her hands over her scrubs. The woman stepped inside, clutching a small dog wrapped in a blanket. The animal whimpered softly, clearly in pain. Emma’s heart clenched. No matter what was happening in the town, her first priority was always the animals. “I found him on the side of the road,” the woman said, her voice shaky. “He was hit by a car, I think. I didn’t know where else to go.” Emma gently examined the dog. He had a broken leg, likely from the impact of the car. His breathing was shallow but steady. He would need surgery, but he would survive. “I’ll take him from here, you’re welcome to check in tomorrow if you’d like.” The woman nodded, her eyes filled with relief. Turning, she left Emma and the dog and returned to her car. After the woman left, Emma prepped and performed the surgery. By the time she finished, night had fallen, and the clinic was bathed in the soft glow of the moonlight filtering through the windows. Emma locked up the clinic, leaving the small dog resting comfortably in one of the cages. As she stepped outside, the cool night air hit her, bringing with it the familiar scents of pine and earth. She wrapped her arms around herself, her thoughts once again drifting to Liam. His dark hair, slightly tousled, framed a face that was devastatingly handsome. Broad shoulders and a muscled chest, Emma’s fingers twitched at the thought of slipping her hand under his leather jacket to feel the firmness for herself. As Emma approached her car, she heard a piercing yelp coming from the forest. She immediately ran through the thick undergrowth, following the cries of pain. Soon, she found herself staring at a wolf pup, whimpering on the ground. Before she could attend to the pup, the audible snap of a stick being stepped on halted her in her tracks. Liam. He had appeared as if summoned by the forest. "Hey," Liam said, his voice low, his eyes scanning the pup. "Hey yourself," Emma replied, stepping aside. "What are you doing here?" Liam nodded towards the pup, "I heard her call. Can you help her?" Before Emma could respond, the wolf stirred, letting out a low, painful whine. Emma’s attention shifted immediately, kneeling beside it. She ran her hand gently over its body, calming it with her touch. Liam watched her, his expression softening, but the tension in the air between them remained. "You really care about animals, don’t you?" Liam said quietly. Emma nodded, not looking at him. "They’re honest. They don’t hide things from you. They don’t keep secrets." Liam flinched at her words, but he didn’t argue. Instead, he crouched beside her, his presence warm and solid next to her. For a moment, they sat in silence, the weight of unspoken truths hanging heavy between them. "I’ll need to do an x-ray. She needs to come back to the clinic," Emma said, watching him closely. Liam nodded, then gently lifted the pup and carried it to the clinic. "Right," Emma said, running her hand over the pup. "I need to get to work." Liam leant against a door frame, arms crossed over his chest. He didn't move an inch whilst she worked, watching her bandaging the pup's ribs and providing pain relief. “Strange”, she said. “The wounds on this pup are so similar to a dog that was brought in earlier today”. Turning to face Liam, she asked him, “you wouldn't know anything about that, would you, Liam?” Her voice hinting at something darker. For a long moment, they stood there, the tension between them thick and palpable. Liam ran a hand through his dark hair, his eyes flicking to the ground. “There are things in this world, Emma—things you don’t understand. The creature you saw… it’s not the only one. There are more of them. And they’re coming.” Emma’s breath caught in her throat. “What are they?” “Shadows,” Liam said, his voice barely more than a whisper. “Creatures born of darkness and fear. They’ve been here for centuries, lurking in the woods, preying on the weak. But they’re not the only danger.” Liam’s gaze was steady; reaching out, he placed a strong hand on her arm, gently rubbing her with his thumb as if to soothe her. His eyes fixed on this exchange, and it appeared as if he had wanted to touch her for some time. After a moment, she heard him speak, his voice was heavy with worry. “I will protect you. I will not let them take you from me.” Emma’s heart pounded in her chest as she looked into Liam’s eyes, seeing the depth of his resolve, the fire of determination that burned beneath his stoic exterior. She felt her cheeks burn as she looked into her eyes. There was no turning back now, no running from the danger that lurked in the shadows. — Weeks had passed since that night in the forest. Liam had been absent from her life since. The dog and the pup both healed; one reunited with their owner, Mr MacKenzie, and the other released back into the forest. Emma had hoped to see Liam in the forest once again during this event. However, she was disappointed to find herself continually alone. It was late one evening when Emma heard a soft knock at the door of the clinic. She rose from her chair and crossed the small space, her pulse quickening with every step. When she opened the door, her suspicion was confirmed. Liam stood on the porch, the light from the single overhead bulb casting long shadows across his face. His dark hair was tousled, as if he had been running his hands through it in frustration, and his intense gaze softened as he looked at her. His eyes spoke of longing, his hand twitching as if trying to decide if he should reach out to touch her. “Can I come in?” His voice was low, a rich tone that somehow made her feel safe. Emma nodded before stepping aside to let him in. He moved with a grace that belied his broad frame, and she found herself acutely aware of how close they were in the small space of her office. She could smell his earthy, manly scent. “I didn’t expect to see you,” Emma said, closing the door behind him. She leaned against it for a moment, as if trying to steady herself. Liam’s eyes flicked around the room before landing back on her, their intensity never waning. “I had to come. There’s something you need to know.” Emma arched an eyebrow, crossing her arms over her chest in an attempt to appear less affected by his presence. “More secrets?” Liam’s lips twitched into something that might have been a smile, but it faded just as quickly. “It’s not like that. I’m not trying to keep things from you.” “Then what is it?” Emma asked, stepping forward, her curiosity once again getting the better of her. Liam didn’t respond right away. Instead, he walked past her and over to the window, his gaze falling on the woods outside. The moon was just beginning to rise, casting an eerie glow across the landscape. He stood there for a long moment, his hands clenched into fists at his sides, as if he was struggling with something deep inside him. Emma watched him, the tension between them building with every second of silence. She could feel it in the air—the weight of whatever it was that Liam was holding back. Her heart raced, not just from the mystery of it all, but from the strange, undeniable pull she felt toward him. There was something about Liam that made her want to step closer to reach out and touch him. “I’m not safe to be around” Liam finally said, his voice so low that Emma had to strain to hear him. “I’m dangerous.” Emma’s breath caught in her throat, and she took a step toward him, closing the distance between them. “What do you mean?” Liam turned to face her, his eyes dark with a mix of pain and something deeper, something that tugged at her heart. “I'm telling you this to keep you safe. Now that you know, you can run and never look back.” Emma felt her chest tighten as she stared into his eyes, seeing the vulnerability he so rarely allowed himself to show. For the first time, she saw past the brooding exterior, past the layers of mystery and distance, and glimpsed the man beneath. Without thinking, Emma took another step forward. They were standing close now so close that she could feel the warmth radiating off his body. Her hand twitched at her side. She wanted to reach out, to touch him, to comfort him. “You don’t have to be alone,” she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. “I’m not afraid of you”. Liam’s gaze dropped to her hand, the one that hovered so close to his own, and for a moment, it seemed as if he might take it. Instead, he looked up, his eyes locking with hers, and the intensity of his gaze sent a shiver down her spine. “It’s better if I am,” he murmured, though there was no conviction in his words. His voice was strained, as if he was fighting against something he didn’t truly believe. Emma shook her head, her heart pounding in her chest. “You don’t get to decide that for me.” The silence that followed was heavy, charged with an energy that neither of them seemed to know how to navigate. They stood there, inches apart, the air between them crackling with unspoken tension. Emma’s hand twitched again, and this time, she didn’t stop herself. She reached out, her fingers brushing gently against the back of his hand. The touch sent a jolt of electricity through her entire body. She could see the effect it had on Liam, too. His jaw clenched, and his eyes darkened with something raw and untamed, something that had been hidden beneath the surface for too long. “Emma,” he said, his voice rough, as if he was warning her. He stepped back, breaking the connection, his expression hardening once more. “I can’t do this, Emma,” he said, his voice rough with emotion. “Stay inside tonight, lock the doors. Don’t open them for anyone.” And then, without another word, he was gone, the door closing softly behind him. Emma stood there for a long moment, staring at the door, her mind racing with everything that had just happened. The tension between them, the closeness, the way he had pulled away at the last moment—it was all too much. She could still feel the ghost of his touch on her skin, the heat of his body lingering in the air. She wouldn’t give up on him. Not yet.
