WE ARRIVED A FEW minutes early and were sitting at our table, wineglasses in hand, when the Bridges arrived. When they had been seated, the chief said, “Well, George, are you settled into your new digs?”
“About ninety percent,” I said. “How about you?”
“I’m not quite that far along.”
“I have to confess that I had help. The entire team, including the new guy, helped me get moved, and Janet took the task of wiping down the desk and credenza on herself.”
“Those people would follow you anywhere. You do realize that?”
“Yeah, and the responsibility weighs on me from time to time. I only hope that the other two lieutenants and their subordinates will come to feel that way, in time.”
