THE NEXT DAY, I went straight from our workout at the Y to the pile of paperwork on my desk. Mike called a couple of hours later to tell me that we had received counteroffers on all three properties, and we decided to discuss them over lunch, so he picked me up at the office shortly after noon. We went to Richard’s for lunch, and the minute we had our Camel Riders in front of us, he laid out the proposals in more detail than he had done earlier on the telephone and concluded by saying, “What do you think we should do?”
“I don’t have our financial data firmly in my head, but I’m confident we have enough liquidity to make three counterproposals.”
