Chapter 5 Asheville, NC ON THE WAY TO Asheville, we stopped at several places where we saw displays of real estate magazines, and by the time we reached the restaurant, we had half a dozen of them. The Depot Restaurant sat beside the railway tracks in Biltmore Village. The village had been built to house the workers on the nearby Biltmore Mansion, and the small 1890s bungalows now housed little shops. In recent years, All Souls’ Episcopal Church, on the other side of the village, had been elevated to cathedral status. The Biltmore Depot, like the Biltmore Mansion and the Cathedral of All Souls, had been designed by Richard Morris Hunt. The depot was completed in 1894, and at Christmas of 1895 it welcomed the friends and relatives of George Vanderbilt for the grand opening of the Biltmor
