CHAPTER SIX — WINE, SILENCE, AND POWER

496 Words
The cellar was Adrien’s idea. Elena knew this the moment he mentioned it—casually, as though it were an afterthought. A private tasting room beneath a discreet restaurant, invitation-only, curated for people who valued privacy as much as luxury. She told herself she agreed because she appreciated good wine. She lied. The space was cool and dim, stone walls lined with carefully labeled bottles. Candlelight flickered between them, softening the edges of everything it touched. The quiet was deliberate. There would be no interruptions here. No audience. Adrien poured the wine himself, unhurried. The red liquid caught the light as it filled her glass. “Tell me what you taste,” he said. Elena lifted the glass, inhaled. “Cherry. Something darker beneath it.” “Patience,” he replied. “It opens slowly.” She took a sip, letting it linger. He watched—not her mouth, but her reaction. The subtle shift in her expression when the flavor settled. “You’re enjoying it,” he observed. “I don’t rush conclusions.” A pause. “Neither do I.” They sat across from each other in silence, the kind that pressed close rather than pushed away. Elena became acutely aware of every sound—the faint clink of glass, the slow cadence of his breathing. “Why me?” she asked suddenly. Adrien didn’t pretend to misunderstand. “You don’t perform. You don’t ask to be noticed.” “That’s not an answer.” He leaned back slightly, considering her. “Because you resist.” The admission sent a ripple through her. “And you enjoy that?” “I respect it.” She studied him then—really studied him. The stillness. The restraint. The way power rested on him without needing to assert itself. “Power changes people,” Elena said quietly. “Yes,” Adrien agreed. “It reveals them.” Another silence. Thicker now. He set his glass down first. “Tell me something you don’t offer easily.” Her pulse thudded. “Why?” “Because I’m offering the same.” Elena hesitated, then spoke before she could overthink it. “I don’t trust desire. It asks too much.” Adrien’s gaze softened—not weakened. Sharpened with understanding. “I don’t trust silence,” he said. “It hides too well.” The words stayed with her as they rose to leave. At the door, Adrien paused. For the first time since they’d met, he stepped closer than safety allowed. Not touching. Never touching. “You have power too,” he said quietly. “You just pretend not to know it.” Elena held his gaze, breath shallow. “And you pretend you’re immune.” A slow smile curved his lips. “No,” he said. “I pretend I’m patient.” She walked away with her heart racing, the taste of wine still on her tongue. Power had shifted. And neither of them was pretending anymore.
