Silas POV
I stand in the hallway, unable to breathe, the shock of the sight in front of me shaking me to the core. And as an alpha, that is impressive.
The hallway is looking more like a warzone right now than a hallway; the air has become thick and is currently vibrating with static electricity. It feels as if lightning is about to hit at any second.
The two guards that I had stationed outside of Lyras' room a few moments ago are now lying slumped against the opposite wall, having been thrown into it with some force. Upon closer inspection, I can see and hear the guards breathing, thank goddess they are not dead. I think to myself, but I am still confused as to what that bang was and if Lyra is safe. After all, she is in the room where the bang had originated.
"Lyra!" I shout, my voice mixing with my wolf, her name ripping from my throat with a half-human, half-wolf guttural growl.
I reach the doorway, the door having been reduced to a pile of splintered wood on the ground.
I step into the room, and my breath leaves me. It takes everything within me to now crumble to the floor at the sight in front of me.
The whole room has been destroyed, and in the middle of the destruction stands Lyra, her silver hair floating in the air, her eyes now fully violent, and she is standing in an attack stance. One I have seen many times before, it is the stance of someone who has found their prey and is about to pounce on them.
My goddess of destruction, Fenrir mumbles in my mind.
Now is not the time to joke, buddy. I say, fear filling me at the sight of Lyra.
My eyes are then drawn to the window that had exploded, and standing in front of it is a hunter, the scent coming from him is intense. His eyes are trained on Lyra, and hers are on him. It takes me a second to realise what has happened here.
The hunter must have entered Lyra's room, and then she went on the defensive; whatever happened to her must have occurred during their altercation, and the change in her was a quick one.
I step forward one step, but the power coming from Lyra makes it harder for me and my wolf to move a step closer.
"Get...away...from her," I growl out at the hunter, Fenrir clawing at the surface to be released and end the hunter's miserable existence. But if I let him out now, he may become Lyra's target.
Lyras's efforts double after my words, her power increases, and she points a slender finger at the hunter. As she does this, the hunter starts to scream and fall to his knees. He holds his nose and head, begging her to stop.
I stay rooted to my spot for a second before I notice blood trickling from Lyra's mouth. I have to get her to stop.
"Lyra, stop!" I shout, using every ounce of mine and Fenrir's strength to lunge forward and reach Lyra.
As soon as I make contact with her, her aura and scent change. The smell that made her mine is gone, replaced with no scent at all; her aura is crushing both her and us.
Mate is hurting. Fenrir whimpers. The power within her is too strong. Silas, save her now!
Fenrir doesn't even need to ask. I instantly wrap my arms around her, pinning her arms to her side and her body to my chest.
Having her this close to me makes me want to take her here and now, mate her and hide her away where she will be safe, but her trembling breaks me. Even now, Lyra is hurting and scared, yet she still stands tall in the face of danger.
Mate is amazing.
that she is. I reply.
Not because of the power, but because she stood her ground without even knowing what is going on. Mate is one powerful creature. Fenrir explains.
I nod my head, my grip on Lyra tightening as I feel her power and aura recede into her. Within a few seconds, her scent is back, and her breathing has evened out. I realise she has passed out when her body collapses completely into me; I quickly scoop her up into my arms and look around at the c*****e.
"What just happened?" the hunter asks, still kneeling under the window. His face now looks like a sheet of ice; clearly, whatever Lyra had done to him was enough to make his hunter instincts vanish, otherwise he would have run rather than enter the window.
"Nothing for you to worry about, but certainly something you can explain is why you and a team are here? Guessing for her?" I ask him, nodding to the unconscious Lyra in my arms.
Silas? Talk to me. The light went out. Is everyone alive? Kaelen asks.
We’re alive, I send back, my mental voice sounding exhausted. The hunters are dealt with. Get a cleanup crew up here and send for the medic. Now.
Yes, sir, plus...
What is it? I ask.
I need to talk to you about something later, alpha.
In my arms, Lyra stirs. A soft moan escaped her lips, and my heart skipped a beat.
"Lyra?" I whisper.
Her eyelashes flutter, then open. The violet in her eyes has receded back to just the slivers that are always there, but pain and confusion are clear in her eyes. She blinks slowly, looking around the room before looking up at me.
"S-Silas?" She asks me, her voice sounding broken and pained.
"I am here. You are safe." I respond, rubbing my hand against her arm, pulling her deeper into my chest and grip.
Lyra looks around the room, her eyes widening in horror at the sight of the two guards getting back on their feet, the door splinters on the ground, and the room looking like a bomb had gone off.
"What... what happened?" she whispers, her voice trembling. A wave of pure, unadulterated fear begins to radiate off her. "Silas, why is the room... did they come for me? Did the men come back?"
I sigh a quiet breath of relief; she doesn't remember.
"I don't..." she starts, but a sob breaks her voice off,
I tighten my hold on her, cradling her more like a baby into my chest, hoping that it brings some form of relief to her. My heart breaks with every sob that leaves her, and I can see the two guards are also looking ashamed; they had failed to protect their future Luna, but I do not blame them. After all, no one could have foreseen this happening.
"It's okay," I lie, my voice thick with the weight of the secrets I now have to keep. "There was a struggle. The pack is handling it. You need to rest."
"I'm scared," she sobs, burying her face in the crook of my neck. "Silas, I’m so scared."
As I rock her back and forth in the ruins of the room, I look over her shoulder at the shaking hunter.
Then my mind is filled with darkness, the counter appearing again, followed by the same ancient, female voice from before.
The Enigma Wolf has awoken. This is your final chance to get it right.
