Chapter 5

1990 Words
Davin _______ I sat in the conference room waiting for the other Alphas to arrive. The Elite Guard was made up of five of the strongest alphas and myself. Our job was to ensure the safety and standing of werewolves within the greater supernatural community. We had eyes on all the major species in case any of them decided to reach for more power.  The Elite Guard had been formed generations ago when wars were a regular occurrence and any pack could easily be wiped out if unprepared or not forewarned. These days we didn’t have as many outright wars but there were a few power-hungry beings who worked in the shadows to get what they wanted.  “Cowards,” Geri growled in my mind. “They are too scared to face us,” he grumbled. He was right but there wasn’t much we could do about it, we had to tackle each threat as it presented itself.  “You’re right. Unfortunately, until we know who they are we cannot force them to fight,” I said, trying to be the voice of reason. Geri was an ancient being, he couldn’t fathom these tactics and just wanted to rip everyone to shreds.  I thought back to the old crone’s appearance in the throne room with a sense of dread. Her aura was powerful but different. I had never felt anything like it before. Her message would be the subject of our discussion today. The awakening of the evil one and the coming of the Scion. I had immediately dismissed it as children’s tales but I couldn’t shake the feeling that she was right. Geri still hadn’t spoken of it, preferring to ignore me every time I asked about it. That in itself was unusual as he was generally quite vocal… about everything, always wanting to fight, to assert his dominance.  The doors opened and five Alphas entered, taking their usual seats quietly. The auras flowing around them were aggressive as usual; we were united in purpose but not everyone got along and disagreements were par for the course at nearly every meeting. Since Geri and I held the higher rank, it was often up to us to ensure it never came to blows. Our word was law and none of them could stand against our command.  After I had greeted everyone and the omegas had served refreshments and left the room, it was time to get to business.  “Thank you all for coming at such short notice,” I began. “The crone came to see me yesterday…” A growl erupted from Jonathan Daley, the Alpha of the Moonlight Pack. An enormous mountain of a man at six-foot-five with unrivaled strength, he was used to going unchallenged except there was not a single wolf who could stand toe to toe with me, and that included him. Jonathan was usually my staunchest ally and shared my hatred for humans, but his outburst was disrespectful and Geri did not take kindly to it, growling loudly as he came to the surface. His dark blue eyes met mine but submitted quickly, his long dark hair falling over his face as he looked down. Geri grunted in satisfaction.  “As I was saying, the crone came to see me yesterday. As you know, she usually does not stray from her forest territory. She came to the throne room and announced that the evil one was stirring and that the Scion would come soon.” I looked around the room gauging their reactions.  A loud guffaw broke the silence. Matty McCreedy, the Alpha of the Red Dawn pack, held his belly as he laughed.  “The Scion is a child’s fairy tale…” he said between breaths. Geri growled again in response and he stopped laughing abruptly. The pain of having to submit to me was obvious by his expression. Matty was a particularly hard Alpha, he ran his pack with military precision, leaving no room for error. The hierarchy was absolute as well, everyone had to know their place, and insubordination was not tolerated. I felt sorry for his pack members, but since he hadn’t actually broken any rules there wasn’t much I could do about it.  Alpha werewolves were all fairly attractive, it was in the genes. Matthew had a blonde buzz cut, light brown eyes, and a square jaw. He trained longer and harder than everyone in his pack and his bulky frame housed a huge amount of power. He was rumored to take a different she-wolf to bed every night, discarding each in the morning and they did not seem to mind either.  “Whether you believe it or not is of no consequence. My wolf has told me to heed her warning and as the Elite Guard we cannot afford to ignore such a warning.” I may have been skeptical myself but I trusted Geri, his spirit was almost as old as the world and he had knowledge that had been lost for eons.  Alpha’s Bernardo and Antony looked at each other. The two of them usually paired up as a team and worked closely together. Their packs shared a border and they were allies.  “What exactly did she say?” Bernardo asked tentatively.  “The evil father stirs, ready yourself. The Scion comes soon. You must protect her,” I repeated her words. The Alphas gasped. I knew what had caused the shock.  “Her?” Matty asked, his expression showing his disdain. “A female cannot be the Scion,” he spat. “Females are weak and only used to procreate,” he stated with a scowl. Jonathan nodded in agreement.  Bernardo and Antony growled loudly, both had found their mates, the other halves of their souls which the Moon Goddess chose for each wolf. They worshipped them, making them equal rulers in their packs. Jonathan, Matty, and I had yet to find our mates. I hoped that when Matty did he would relax somewhat and his pack members could have normal lives.  “What? You two can growl all you like, your mates make you weak,” Matty continued.  “Your way of thinking is weak. Our mates are our greatest strengths.” Antony spoke out for the first time. “Without your mate, you are only half of yourself. You are only deluding yourself if you think otherwise.”  Personally, I felt the Scion couldn’t be female too. They were after all the weaker s*x. I had been waiting for my mate for years and had been frustrated that I hadn’t been able to find her. I would love and cherish her, but I didn’t believe that any female could equal my and Geri’s strength. Our mate was another thing Geri wouldn’t talk about so he was of no help in that regard.  “Enough,” I shouted, slamming my hand down on the table. It cracked. “Kieran, what do you have to say?” I addressed the last Alpha since everyone else had already aired their views.  “My wolf says it is very important that we find her as soon as possible. The consequences if we don’t could be disastrous. He is very adamant about it,” Kieran said quietly. His gaze was determined, he would do it with or without us.  Of all the Alphas in the room, Kieran Justice was the most level-headed. He was exceptionally smart, a genius really, and unrivaled in war strategy. Whether it was him, his wolf, or a combination of them, they were irreplaceable on this council. So his opinion mattered a great deal to me.  I held Kieran’s gaze, his brown eyes held a glint of amusement as if he knew something we didn’t. I raised an eyebrow questioningly and the beginnings of a smile showed on his face but he said nothing further.  “That’s it then, we will find her and bring her to our kingdom for protection,” I declared.  “What if she doesn’t want to come?” Bernardo asked. Matty snorted at the question. “She will not have a choice, the crone said to protect her so that’s what we’ll do,” I said with finality. “Send out your scouts and see if you can find any traces of her. We need to find her quickly,” I commanded.  “We will take a short break for refreshments,”  I announced as I mind-linked the omegas to bring in some drinks and snacks.  Soon the door opened and three omegas came in with platters of sandwiches, juice, tea, and coffee.  It was basic and I couldn't help but think that my Luna should have been there to arrange it.   Matty had a  lascivious look on his face as he eyed one particular omega.  She was a tiny thing with bright red hair and emerald eyes.  She tried her best to avoid his gaze and just do her job but Matty was having none of it.  He walked up to her and grabbed her by the waist pulling her close to him. “How about you and me have a little fun later,” he grinned. The look of terror on her face spoke volumes.  She definitely did not want to have fun with him later or at all.  She squirmed as she tried to escape his grasp but her tiny frame stood no chance against the large Alpha.  “Please Alpha,  let me go,”  she begged.  His grin morphed into an angry scowl.  His grip tightened as he narrowed his eyes. Clearly, he was not used to being rejected.  “Matty get your hands off her,” I ordered.  “You dare to manhandle my pack member right in front of me?”  I asked,  Geri and my voices melding in anger. His face scrunched up and little beads of sweat popped up on his forehead as he tried to fight my command.  I felt my eyes flicker between its usual green and Geri's black indicating that he was very close to the surface and would likely take over at any moment.   Matty looked at me and submitted immediately.  None of them would take Geri on,  it would mean certain suicide.  There was a reason I was the king of werewolves,  Geri was like an elemental force and no wolf could stand before him.  He quickly let her go and she put the tray down and scurried from the room,  a look of relief on her face.  I mind-linked the head omega and told her to let the girl go to her room for the rest of the day.  I did not need Matty to go looking for her after the meeting.  “Let's get back to business,” I ordered. “Any other news?” I asked.  Matty shifted uncomfortably in his seat but remained quiet.   “Yes actually,”  Kieren said. “Something is going on with the vamps,  they're acting suspiciously.  Their nocturnal activities seem to have some kind of purpose as if they have a mission they are trying to accomplish.  I don't have many details but I'm watching them.  As soon as I have any information of value, I'll let you know.”  “That's strange,  what do you think it's about,”  I asked Kieren. The bloodsuckers usually only had one thing on their minds, one purpose, to feed.   “I don't know but this close to the warning of the crone,  it's very concerning and I don't believe in coincidences,”  he answered with a frown.  When Kieran frowned it was cause for concern. I made a mental note to put some feelers out and try to find out about the vamps’ activities.   “Anything else?”  I asked.  Everyone shook their heads. “In that case, this meeting is adjourned.  We will meet again in one week. I expect an update from everyone then.”
