I was startled when she asked for my name. How did she know? I wondered if she had spoken to Neon.
Had he told her about that day, about me pushing him, thinking I was trying to kill him? What else had he shared with her? The questions raced through my mind, each one more frantic than the last.
"I just want to know the man I'm going to spend the rest of my life with," she said, pulling me out of my spiraling thoughts.
"Do you hate me now?" I asked, my voice trembling.
"What?" she exclaimed, surprise in her eyes. "No, of course not. I just thought..."
"Do you want to know what really happened?" I interrupted gently.
She nodded, and her reaction, so sincere and innocent, made me smile despite my anxiety.
