Evans’s POV As I walked down the hospital hallway to my mother’s room, my heart pounded faster than a bolt of lightning. Alec had whispered the room number to me before I entered the hospital, his tone heavy with something he couldn’t quite say. The fluorescent lights above seemed harsher, the sterile smell of antiseptic thicker, more suffocating with every step I took. Finally, I found the room. I stood behind the door for a moment, my hand hovering over the handle as I gathered myself. The tension in my chest felt like a knot I couldn’t untangle. But I had to go in; I had to face whatever was waiting for me. I pushed the door open, and to my surprise, Neon was seated beside my mother. He grinned at me, as if he’d been expecting me all along, still wearing that infuriating mask of calm
