Dusk awoke to the sound of Holly’s Igor clock screaming “PULL THE LEVER!”, unlike Clowe who was use to it and was still sleeping, its loud Igor scream sent Dawn and Dusk jumping out of bed. Holly, half asleep, stretched her arm out and pulled ‘The lever’, turning off her alarm. They all got dressed and ready for breakfast when they heard a knock at the door.
“Good morning ladies,” Dean spoke brightly as he entered their room. “Are we up and ready to greet the day?” Holly and Dusk looked at Dean with daggers in their eyes.
“Oh crap, you’re a morning person,” Dusk said as she rubbed her eyes.
“Yes I am,” Dean said proudly. “I came to show you guys where the cafeteria is.”
“I can take them Dean,” Holly told him.
“Then I came to tag along.”
“That’s great because I’m starving,” Dawn announced as she stuffed her wallet into her back pocket and headed out the door with Holly and Dean. “Hey, are you guys coming?” she asked.
“I’ll catch up in a sec. I’ve still got to brush my teeth,” Dusk told Dawn.
“Okay, don’t forget that we have student orientation today after breakfast,” Dusk yelled to Dawn as Dawn waved her off.
“Yeah, yeah, I know bye.”
Dusk stayed silent as the door closed behind her. She began to put some of her things away when Clowe walked out of the restroom. She was fully dressed in her uniform and sat on her bed. She took out a brush and a hair tie from her desk drawer and began to put her hair up in a ponytail.
“I thought you went down to breakfast with the girls and Dean,” Dusk said as she continued to rearrange her things.
“No. They don’t really ask me to hang out or do breakfast with them.” Clowe smiled.
“With them….?” Dusk asked confused by the way Clowe had said “Them.”
“Holly and Dean” she said softly “Their in what is known as the ‘popular group’.”
“What are you talking about?” Dusk asked now truly confused.
Clowe sighed and began to tell her how Holly, Dean and some of the other students were known as the ‘populars’ of New Haven Prep. Even Logan was one of the cool juniors. It appeared that Clowe didn’t really hang out with them or particularly any other group. She was smart, shy, and pretty much alone. The only time she was around people was when they were asking her questions or she was doing her job as freshmen president.
Dusk grabbed her things and cleared her throat before speaking, “Well, Clowe you’re the first friend Dawn and I met here, so if they don’t like it, we can all go hang out somewhere else.” Dusk said with attitude, “Come on roomy lets go find Dawn.” Grabbing her by the arm they both headed down towards the cafeteria. Dusk later realized it was a good thing that Clowe had stayed behind because she had no idea where she was going.
When they arrived at the cafeteria the group had already assembled themselves at a very large table smack dab in the middle of the cafeteria.
“Hey guys!” Dean waved his hand back and forth, “Over here!”
There were more people at the table with Dawn than just Dean and Holly, Dusk noticed as she and Clowe came closer. Clowe froze nervously looking at the full table.
“The trick is to not be afraid. They can smell fear” Dusk said smiling down at Clowe. Clowe instantly relaxed against her as she smiled back at her.
So these are the popular people Dusk thought, as she walked towards the table.
Be nice. Dawn shot a look at Dusk who could feel all eyes on her as she walked towards the table. Dusk looked around as she walked and noticed Alec, Dean’s roommate, staring at her with those same light blue eyes of his. She quickly looked away as Clowe and her reached the table.
Just pretend that he isn’t there! She told herself over and over again.
Who? Dawn asked in their usual way, but Dusk just shook her head. Logan was sitting next to Dawn comfortably as his little brother whose name Dusk couldn’t seem to remember sat on other side of Dawn poking at his food.
Dawn stood up and came over to Dusk. She seemed especially happy today for some reason. In fact, she was positively glowing. “Morning sunshine, let me make all the introductions to the table,” Dawn said as she motioned to everyone. “You already know Holly and Clowe.” Dawn said dismissing their introduction. She moved on to the next students seated at the table. “You know Logan; Holly’s older brother, and a junior.” She said giving Dusk her flirty eye, “They all are into the Halloween theme not just Holly. This is James, Holly’s boyfriend” Dawn said as she motioned to the boy sitting next to Holly. Dusk noticed Logan roll his eyes at this particular introduction.
“Oh and you remember their little brother Seth right? He’s thirteen but they let all the grades eat breakfast together, because apparently, a lot of families come to this school.”
Seth, huh, so that was his name, Dusk thought as she stared at him. Once again he was dressed very differently from his two older siblings Logan and Holly. He looked perfectly normal. He was wearing a pair of light blue jeans and a white t-shirt, compared to Holly’s bright orange Halloween themed dress and Logan’s dark jeans and shirt. Dusk watched as Dawn went from person to person introducing them. She couldn’t believe how much she already knew about every person at the table. She had only been about an hour with these people.
Dawn continued like it was completely normal for her to have all this information, which Dusk was glad that she did. It allowed Dusk to take her mind off the window watcher boy, Alec from across the room who was still staring at her.
“And Holly,” Dawn continued, “also has two little twin sisters that are in the elementary section of the school and their names are Fey and Lulu” Dawn stopped to catch her breath and continued, “The girl who was chasing Holly yesterday is actually her best friend. Her name is Angel Winters, she’s a sophomore. She has a little brother and sister in elementary. Her two smoking hot older brothers, the twins, Jack and Nick are juniors and also happen to be roommates with Logan.” Dawn took another breath, “Okay next is Dean,” Dawn said pointing to the boy with the reddish brown hair and black tips.
“Dean Fuller we’ve met,” He said winking at Dusk as Dawn continued his introduction, “He’s Native American and the youngest in his family. He’s also the only boy and his room’s right across from ours on the other side of the bridge. Isn’t that freaking awesome!”
“It’s so awesome,” Dusk said joking with her sister.
“Unfortunately,” Dawn whispered into Dusk’s ear, “Dean’s roommate is that weirdo window watching kid who’s been all like American Beauty stalking you since we got here.” Dawn said nudging her sister in the ribs.
Shut up! Dusk thought to Dawn.
“What? He has that full on criminal minds stalker gaze going on with you.”
“You noticed that?” Dusk asked.
“Of course I did! It’s totally creepy, but kind of hot all at the same time” Dawn said, she glanced to where the window watcher boy was starring right at Dusk. “His name is Alec Heart. Apparently he has two older brothers one is a fertility doctor and one is a marriage counselor.”
“Why isn’t he sitting with us?” Dusk asked.
“What?”
“Why isn’t Alec sitting with us?”
“How should I know? I’m not the kind of person who prys into other peoples lives.” Dawn told her. Dusk looked at her sister in a playfully shocked expression.
“I’m not! I can’t help it if people tell me their life stories. Now stop interrupting.”
“Okay.” She said. By this time, Dusk had taken her seat next to Dawn at the table and Clowe had been pulled next to Dean.
“But I do know that the two twins on either side of Alec are the Banner twins. The red head is named Katherine, but everyone here just calls her Kate. The boy is Caleb. He’s younger than her by like a minute or something, but he’s super nice and sweet,” Dawn said, finally finished and really pleased with her self.
At that moment another boy entered the cafeteria with a friend and caught Dusk’s eye. The boy was handsome. He was playing with what looked like a silver dollar in his left hand. Dusk felt like challenging Dawn, “You say that you know everyone here at our new school right?”
“Yes I do” Dawn said looking at her sister skeptically.
“Then who’s Mr. handsome who just came in?” Dusk said pointing to the boy with bright green eyes and brown skin. He stood looking like a tall caramel Grecian god sculpture. Dawn smiled at Dusk, sticking a piece of waffle into her mouth, “That’s Tristan O’Connell. He is black Irish American, he also has four little sisters, there’s a set of twins in his family too. His, equal in hotness, friend is Trent.” Dawn said showing off.
“It is me or is there like a Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen theme to all the families here?” Dusk leaned in and whispered to Dawn.
“I know right! In our last school we were the only twins. Here it seems like every other person is a twin.” Dawn whispered back.
“Actually the Heart’s, Eve’s, Winter’s, Banner’s, and O’Connell’s are the only families with twins that I’ve noticed,” Clowe whispered to them, overhearing their conversation, “Well now there are you guys to add to the twin population at the school.”
Dusk smiled at her as she looked at the breakfast line, “I’m hungry” she said. Feeling her stomach rumble she looked toward Clowe, “What about you?”
“I’m hungry” Clowe shyly said.
“I could totally eat too,” Dawn said eating the last piece of waffle in her hand.
Man can my sister eat, Dusk thought as she watched her sister lick each of her fingers. Lucky there isn’t a cow around here or she would eat that too. Dusk giggled at the thought.
“We’re going to go get something to eat,” Dawn said to Logan as he smiling. Dusk nudged at Dawn as they walked to the lunch line. Dusk noticed that Dawn had started to blush, “I would eat the cow too thank you very much,” Dawn said to Dusk who started laughing.
“What?” Clowe asked.
“Nothing,” The girls said in unison, “Inside joke.”
As they walked to the breakfast line Dusk was happy to see her little sister taking an interest in somebody. Back in their hometown, Dawn had high school guys after her, but she never seemed interested in them. Dusk glanced back at Logan and then to her sister, “So Logan huh,” Dusk asked Dawn.
“Shut up,” Dawn said blushing deeper. The girls didn’t have to wait long for food. After Dawn had taken what seemed to be the rest of the breakfast, the girls turned to head back to their table.
Dusk smiled and turned to Clowe asking, “So, what about your family Clowe? Any brothers or sisters back home?”
“Na, it’s just me and my dad. I’m an only child,” She said pushing up her glasses and giggling a little, “My dad kind of spoils me a lot.”
Dusk was laughing with Clowe and Dawn when suddenly, Dusk was knocked down from behind. The push sends her down to the ground and face first into her tray of food. As expected, the incident was met with an eruption of clapping and laughter from the rest of the students eating breakfast. Dusk looked up ready to wipe her face when she noticed that the red haired girl, Kate, who had been sitting at Alec’s table, was standing in front of her.
“Watch where you’re going,” Kate said to Dusk. Smiling as she looked down at her with a huge grin on her face filled with superiority. She flipped her hair back and began to walk away.
“Are you ok?” Clowe said to Dusk as she knelt beside her wiping the food off Dusk’s face and shirt. “She probably didn’t see you.”
“She should at least apologize,” Dawn said.
Clowe looked up at Dawn, “Kate’s not really one to apologize.”
“Dawn its okay. It’s just food,” Dusk said shaking her shirt free of food.
“No, it’s not okay. She should learn some manners.” Dawn said as she quickly moved around the other lunch tables to stand right in front of Kate.
“Out of my way freshmen,” Kate sneered.
“I’m sorry. You just forgot to do something back there.”
“Oh yeah, and what was that.”
“APOLIGIZE!” Dawn said as she pushed Kate’s tray up and into her face. Kate barely had had time to scream as Dawn continued to push the tray into Kate’s face. Forcing her to trip backwards and fall down butt first against the cold floor of the cafeteria. Unlike when Dusk had tripped and everyone in the cafeteria had laughed, there was a silence that fell over the students with deafening quickness. The whole room seemed to be in a state of limbo, each student trying to anticipate what would happen next. Everyone that is, except for the students that were seated at the popular table. They were all standing like everyone else but instead of looking at the action they were all looking at Alec.
Great! School hadn’t even officially started and Dawn was already going to get herself thrown into jail, Dusk thought as she stood quickly. She tried to make her way towards Dawn before her little sister ended up in another fight. She didn’t make it in time before Kate got up off the floor and started shouting.
“You are so dead! Do you have any idea who I am?” Kate said.
Dawn just put out her hands to Kate, “Bring it on you spoiled, prissy little…”
“What did you just call me?” Dusk watched the scene unfold in front of her as she noticed something strange happen. Dusk could have sworn that a dark green shimmer flashed across Kate’s hair. If she would have blinked, she would have missed it. Dusk looked around at the other students and then at Dawn but no one seemed to notice the change but her. She shook it off quickly as a trick of the light.
“Oh, I’m sorry. You didn’t hear me,” Dawn said to Kate. She leaned in and began signing slowly to Kate, “I said you’re spoiled, prissy…”
“That’s it! You have no idea who you are dealing with,” Kate yelled. As Kate yelled, Dusk saw a second flash of green go through Kate’s hair. This time it was unmistakable.
This doesn’t feel right. Dusk thought to herself. She quickly stepped in front of Dawn trying to push her away from the situation.
“Let it go Dawn. I’m fine. No harm no foul,” Dusk told Dawn as she tried to push her towards the exit door of the lunchroom.
“No way! I’m gonna give that plastic pop tart a free nose job,” Dawn yelled to Kate as Dusk continued to push her back. Suddenly Dusk felt a sharp pain at the back of her head as Kate yanked her from behind by her hair pulling her away from Dawn. Kate swung at Dawn with all her strength but Dawn just blocked it. She shoved Kate backwards with all her might, sending Kate crashing into Dusk, knocking them both to the ground.
At seeing Dawn almost take a hit, Logan decided to stop the fight when Holly reached out and grabbed Logan by the arm, “Don’t interfere,” Holly told him.
“But its Dawn,” Logan argued to his little sister.
“She’s not our concern.”
“But she’s a NORM!” He said, “And Kate could hurt her.”
“Kate belongs to Alec. It’s his problem to deal with it.” Holly firmly answered Logan.
“Then why isn’t he stopping this.” Logan demanded.
She shook her head silently at her brother. She didn’t understand why Alec had let Kate go this far either. Holly looked over at Alec. “Alec!” She called to him loudly. Alec glanced to Holly and met her gaze. He stood up from where he was sitting atop of the table completely annoyed and began to walk over to Kate, Dawn, and Dusk. Caleb following closely behind Alec.
Dawn shouted at Kate after she had pushed her, “Stay down!” Dawn walked passed Kate to Dusk, who was lying on the floor. Dawn couldn’t help giggle just a little bit when she saw Dusk’s annoyed expression, “I’m so sorry Dusk are you okay?”
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
“How touching.” Kate said coming up behind Dawn. Again, there was a flash of green shimmer, but this time it was in Kate’s eyes. The green was light with a hint of silver and began to spread rapidly throughout Kate’s face.
“What the…” Dawn began to say.
“Katherine!” Caleb, her brother, shouted to her. Kate ignored her brother as she leaned forward to grab Dawn. “Katherine don’t,” Caleb pleaded as he and Alec picked up their pace through the students. Fearing what Kate might do. Before they could get to her, Kate grabbed Dawn by the shoulder, her face changing suddenly. It was no longer a shimmer that flashed and then was gone. Her skin was pale green and her eyes began to become brighter and brighter till they were neon green. The girls didn’t know how to react.
“Don’t touch her,” Dusk shouted in a panic. She placed her hand on Kate’s chest trying to push her away from Dawn. Kate grabbed Dusk’s hand as her eyes suddenly widened with shock and what happened next, no one could explain, not even Dusk.
