Things were different now. Catherine had few friends left, and Chloe was the only one who had stuck around—her best friend and closest confidante. Chloe didn’t come from a wealthy family, so whenever holidays came around, she’d take on odd jobs to make ends meet, and this summer was no different.
This time, she found a temporary gig as a reporter at a newspaper. It sounded respectable enough, but in reality, it was just paparazzi work—staking out celebrities and snapping their photos. And every time a story broke, she would drag Catherine along to help. Catherine hated Chloe's job, feeling it was invasive and unethical. But whenever she tried to convince Chloe to quit, Chloe would snap back, "Not all of us have it as good as you, being a lady of leisure. If I quit, are you going to support me?"
Every time Chloe made a remark about her being some rich housewife, Catherine couldn’t help but feel a pang of bitterness. Only she knew how painful this so-called privileged life really was. But she kept her misery hidden, even from her closest friend. Why she pretended to be so happy, even she couldn’t fully understand.
Before long, Chloe sent over the address. Catherine splashed some water on her face in the bathroom and grabbed her high-powered camera before rushing out the door.
When she arrived at the location, it took her a while to find Chloe, who was hiding in the shadows of some bushes, waving at her in a conspiratorial manner. "Over here, Cathy!"
Catherine quickly crouched down beside her. Across the street was an exclusive, high-end private club. The driveway was lined with luxury cars, headlights gleaming in the night, while inside, chandeliers lit up the place, and neon lights shimmered alongside the moonlight, making the entire building glow.
“Do you see her? That’s Serena, the international superstar!” Chloe whispered excitedly, practically shaking with anticipation. She handed the binoculars to Catherine, who raised them and looked in the direction Chloe had pointed. Through the large glass windows, a woman sat near the front of the lobby.
Dressed in a sleek black dress with a low baseball cap that concealed most of her face, she had short hair casually framing her cheeks. Despite her efforts at disguise, Catherine instantly recognized her—it really was Serena. A cup of coffee sat untouched beside her, and she kept glancing toward the door, checking the time as if she were waiting for someone.
Catherine was shocked. They had tailed plenty of second- and third-rate celebrities before, but this was a huge catch. For a moment, she couldn’t believe her eyes.
“Coming to a place like this late at night? She’s got to be here for a date. If Serena’s got a boyfriend, this is going to be massive news! I’m going to make a fortune!” Chloe grew more excited with every word.
Serena had famously claimed in interviews that she would never get married or even date anyone. In her ten years in the industry, she had no romantic scandals at all. No matter how many men had tried to woo her, she always remained cold and distant—a true ice queen.
If she really had a secret boyfriend, it would be a bombshell story.
Even Catherine, who wasn’t normally interested in gossip, found herself intrigued by the unfolding drama.
“He’s here! He’s here!” Chloe’s voice shot up in excitement as she quickly lifted her camera.
From a distance, they watched as a tall man walked into the club. Serena immediately stood up, smiling warmly as she hurried toward him. They embraced naturally, and Serena leaned in, whispering something into his ear with a smile, their interaction filled with undeniable closeness.
