Chapter 31Montoya and his men now out of sight and range, Sean backed onto the shoulder of the road, skidding to a stop. His hand went for the CB radio, twisting its volume dial to the right. Static blared. He pulled the speakermic to his lips and held down its side button. “My name is Sean Coleman,” he said, his voice hoarse. “I’m inside the Sloan Canyon Conservation Area. A ranger on duty has been shot and killed. I’m in her vehicle. The man who shot her is Lautaro Montoya. He’s a federal fugitive. He and his men are after us. We need help!” Static returned when he released the button. He waited for seconds that felt like minutes, the static remaining consistent. He tried a second time, again hearing nothing but more static. He began switching channels and only found more of the same.
