Chapter 5: A Traitor In Our Midst

1286 Words
Kieran’s POV “Kael, help me get them on the horse” I say to my guard as I carry my injured wolves. I look at them, one looks like he wouldn’t make it. While the other looks badly injured. “Quickly, let’s rush them to the healing center” I ordered. “Yes, my Lord”. We reach the healing center in about 20 minutes. And I immediately request for the healer to examine them. She was the best healer here. “I don’t think they’ll make it, my Lord,” the healer tells me with tears in her eyes. “Do everything you can to save them” I gritted my teeth, trying to control my anger. “I’ll try my best, my Lord”. Two hours had passed and I had still not heard anything from the healer. “Kael!” I called out to my guard. “Yes, your grace”. “Check what is happening in there”. I told him pointing at the healing room. “Your grace, I think it’s best we leave the healer to do her work”. My head snapped to look at the person talking to me. “Are you telling me what to do?” “N…no your grace”. He stuttered. “Then do what I told you to do”. He nodded and left. I don’t have the patience to wait. I need to know if my wolves would be alright or not. A few minutes later, Kael came back with a smile on his face”. “They’ll be alright, your grace. They are already talking but they are still weak”. Kael said with a happy look on his face. I breathed a sigh of relief. Thank the gods. I went to see them and they were indeed doing okay. “Your grace, what are we going to do about the killings?” Kael asked. He reminded me of the problem we had at hand. “I don’t know”. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know how to save my people. My people can’t keep dying. I was suddenly consumed with anger . “I have to find the Veyrith witch”. I muttered to myself I stormed out of the healing center and went to the palace. AT THE PALACE I sat on my throne with my head placed on my palms. I was thinking I was trying to look for a way to find the witch. “Even though I found her, will she willingly follow me to save my people?” I ask myself as I shake my head. I was having a throbbing headache. My mind was occupied And my uncle just disappeared The thought of my uncle disappearing when I needed him made me more furious. My jaw tightened. “That old man is going to drive me insane” “Kieran!” I froze. I looked at the entrance. My uncle stood there “Speak of the devil and he appears” I mutter to myself. “Where the hell have you been?” I asked in anger. “Kieran, calm down” “Don’t tell me to calm down. My people are dying, uncle. I don’t know what to do or where to start and you just disappear without a word” “I didn’t just disappear, I went to find answers”. “Really, answers?”. I scoffed. “Yes, answers”. “So what did you find?” I say as I stand up from my throne. “The vampires are much closer to finding the witch” I sighed and sat down back on my throne. The headache has gotten worse. I press my fingers on the temple of my head. I sip the wine that has been sitting on the table. I sigh again. “I found a trail” “A trail?, where does it lead to?” I asked “Back to the Moravian pack” “I don’t understand” “Someone here is helping the vampires find the witch” “Impossible” I say angrily. I stand up from my seat again. My people can’t betray me. It’s not possible. “I’m telling you, Kieran”. “How do you know?” I asked. “Because whoever it is has access to information that only the alpha and closest council members should know”. “So someone from my council is helping the vampires?”. “Exactly”. Why would the person do that?. Why help the vampires?. They are our enemy. There’s a traitor in our midst. And I must catch the person. “So you’re telling me that someone in my pack knows about the Veyrith bloodline and where to find the witch?" I asked. My uncle nodded. “But I barely know anything myself”. “I know”. I paced across the room, trying to process the information I just heard. The curse. The vampires. The Veyrith witch. And now a traitor?. “The traitor knew about the last descendant of the Veyrith bloodline before you did and told the vampires. That’s why they came to attack” I stopped pacing and looked at my uncle with a confused facial expression. “Don’t you get Kieran?” “That was a warning, the vampires came to warn us”. My uncle continued. “Then we need to find the traitor,” I said with anger in my eye. My eyes burned red. I craved bloodshed. I need my brother. “Kael!” “Yes, your sovereignty” “Send a message to my brother, tell him a war is coming and he’s needed in the palace” “Yes, your grace”. My eyes were still burning red, refusing to return to its natural colour. I was consumed with rage. “Your grace!”. Someone called to me in fear. I looked up sharply to see Valore and two other guards running behind him. “Valore, what happened?”. “We were attacked”. “By whom? Where’s the witch?” I looked behind Valore to see two other guards bring the witch unconscious. My eyes widened. “Put her down”. I ordered. They placed her gently on the floor and I tried to check her pulse but I couldn’t feel anything. I’m not sure if she’s still alive. “What happened there?”. “We were attacked by the vampires” “How many of them?” “I don’t know, they were too many to count”. His voice trembled “How come you’re not injured?” I asked with squinted eyes. “Because they weren’t trying to kill us” “What do you mean” “They were trying to get her,” Valore said, pointing towards the witch on the floor. “Why would they attack her if they need her?” “She was trying to cast a protection spell and she just slumped. I think she got weak”. “So why were the vampires trying to get her?” I asked. “I don’t know”. My fist clenched. “My Lord, the witch found something”. Valore continued. “What did she find?” “A hidden cave” “A cave in the forest?” I asked to confirm if I heard correctly. “Yes, my Lord”. “What is in the cave?” “Something that should have remained buried”.
