Tim reacted instantly, shouting at Hayden to alert him to the danger. Nicole was holding a detonator, with her trembling finger hovering over the switch. A thin wire ran from it, behind a table and across to the edge of the dance floor, where it disappeared beyond reach, presumably connected to a hidden cache of Anfo explosive. Nicole must have connected the detonator while everyone was busy eating, he realised, because she hadn’t moved from the corner of the dance floor since about then. Hayley had been onto something after all. He should have paid more attention.
The device was simple, and so very easy to disconnect, except that Nicole evidently could not fully control what she was doing. Tim knew enough to understand other forces were at work, and the slightest interference
